Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail

Volunteer Info and Form

The Westwood/Highland Park and Delridge Neighborhood Plans included the concept of creating a public trail that would follow the 3-mile length of Longfellow Creek, beginning at Roxhill Park, ending near the West Seattle Bridge, and linking neighborhoods and public open space along the way. The Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail was born.

In March 2000, Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA), Longfellow Creek Advisory Council (LCAC), and Westwood Neighborhood Council (WNC) combined resources to apply for a $100,000 City of Seattle Neigborhood Matching Fund Grant to design the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail, to build one or two segments of the trail, and install amenities where appropriate at selected locations. The $100,000 grant was awarded by the City Council in July 2000.

The main portion of the matching fund grant will be used by the community to enlist the services of a Design Team to design a community-wide trail system that connects "focal points" within the Longfellow Creek corridor. The design process will lay the foundation to reclaim and enhance the Longfellow Creek corridor by creating a comprehensive trail system that enhances public access and links to the existing parks and other community attractions.

One of the requirements of the matching fund grant is a neighborhood match of volunteer hours, from individuals and groups.

We need over 1,200 hours of community support to make this work!

Please sign the volunteer pledge form with an estimate of the number of hours you can give (e.g., two design meetings - 4 hours, hand-out flyers in your neighborhood - 2 hours, help build a section of the trail - 4 hours = 10 hours).

If you REALLY want to help, volunteer to be on the Steering Committee and make sure the whole project runs smoothly! The Steering Committee will meet regularly in the next year. One of its first tasks will be to select a project manager and design contractor.
