West Seattle Peace Festival and Forum

The meaning of peace and cultural awareness have come up several times in
our history. The constitution encouraged equality. Dr. Martin Luther King
gave his life to eliminate prejudice. There are countless other events
relating to peace and equality that we can find in our history books, yet
today, their realization is slowly slipping away. With that in mind,
Sealth's Sports and Events Marketing class has created a project that
focuses on peace and understanding in our community, the West Seattle Peace
Festival and Forum. Through the combined efforts of Sealth students and
community members this project addresses concerns that affect both the
community and the school and will provide a proactive forum to let those
concerns be heard.
West Seattle is home to 63 different ethnicities, 49 of which are
represented here at Sealth. The West Seattle Peace Festival and Forum will
celebrate that diversity by inviting students and their families, along
with community members, to participate in a cultural celebration that
showcases the uniqueness of each. Central to the celebration will be the
production of a living history documentary of each culture.
A photo exhibit, entitled Thru The Eyes of A Child will showcase the works
of West Seattle elementary through high school students who have taken
pictures on what peace and conflict mean to them.
We have created a Cultural Timeline showing all of the different tribes,
cultures and ethnicities that came together in West Seattle to weave the
wonderful social fabric we have today. Researched entirely by Sealth
students, the cultural timeline is the most comprehensive look at the
cultural diversity in West Seattle ever done.
The event culminates with the Peace Forum, a roundtable gathering of
students, neighbors, school district personnel, and prominent members from
city government. Together we will address the problems and concerns that
affect us all. For every concern we will find a solution, for every
problem we will foster change. We will sit together, holding the key for
tomorrow's peace that we hope to achieve in the future, together.
