Roxhill Park Wetland Restoration

Roxhill Bog News

Our efforts to restore the Bog during 2000 & 2001 have paid off and the re-established Bog is growing & developing well. Now, our maintenance tasks are much less than in the critical first year. As we move into 2002, it's time to focus on the Bog's developing ecosystem through education & discovery activities as well as beginning Phase II of the wetland restoration.

At 2002 work parties, we plan to continue to explore the Bog and its residents with educational activities. Please watch for upcoming announcements to include:

Background info

Roxhill Park, at the headwaters of Longfellow Creek, is in the midst of an incredible rebirth. In September 2000, lawn and fill was removed from a portion of the Park to reveal a unique peat bog that had been buried since the late 1960's. In the autumn of 2000 and early 2001, volunteers planted over 20,000 native plants in the peat bog and surrounding uplands. The community-initiated planting of this area will help restore a natural habitat and create a new educational resource. Instead of soggy grass, the park will become a place for people to go for relaxing walks, enhance their bird-watching skills, or just sit on a bench and enjoy the scenery. The restoration of the wetland will improve water quality and steady water flow to Longfellow Creek, enhancing the Creek and improving Salmon habitat.

Roxhill Park is located at 29th Avenue SW and SW Barton Street, across from Westwood Town Center in West Seattle.

Roxhill Park work partyContinuing Restoration and Stewardship Efforts -
Stewardship and restoration efforts are on going. To date, over 300 volunteers have been involved. Roxhill Park Stewardship Committee (RPSC), a group of Westwood neighborhood volunteers, in cooperation w/ Seattle Parks Dept. and Starflower Foundation, coordinates these efforts at Roxhill Park. Monthly work parties, called "Bog Events", are held to maintain, monitor, enhance, and continue restoration of the Bog and surrounding parklands. Bog Events are held the Second Saturdays of each month from 10am-2pm. RPSC also coordinates outreach and education efforts to schools, neighbors, businesses, and special interest groups.

Our mission statement:
This community recognizes a unique opportunity to restore and become stewards of an urban bog at the headwaters of Longfellow Creek. The stewardship experience will involve caring for and about Roxhill Park and Longfellow Creek through education, maintenance, and monitoring the health and success of this restored wetland.
