Some numbers for you stats hounds, courtesy of Jim Evans at StarFlower:
On Thursday, 11/3/00 he wrote:
"I just counted this morning. Remaining on site are 1,250 trees, shrubs,
&
sword ferns (out of an original 2,650). Almost all of these are 1 & 2 gallon
size; fewer than 50 are larger. There are also about 1,100 wetland plants of
various sizes (out of an original 9,300): about 1/2 are bare roots, the rest
are tubes & 2"-4" sizes.
This means about 1,400 trees, shrubs, & ferns (52%) have already been
planted, along with 8,220 wetland plants (88%). The disparity between the
percentages of trees, shrubs etc., & wetland plants is because relatively
more of the wetland plant area was in finished, plantable condition.
Remaining trees, shrubs, etc. will mostly go behind (east) of the mound, &
along the east-west LATCH fence. Wetland plants will go into the spillway
under the bigger of the 2 bridges, along the peatland slopes in the same
area, & into the area at the NE corner of the peatland where a catch basin
is to be installed. Contract work in these areas will hopefully be
substantially complete within the next couple of weeks.
At present all areas available for planting have been planted.
I'd like to make a note here, since receiving the above information. The
Steering Committee learned today that it is TOO WET for the heavy equipment
to go in. So it's possible there won't be any more actual planting until
Spring - but there's still stuff to do! See you on the 18th!
(The catch basin has been installed)
