| North Seattle Grassroots Radio (NSGR) is a radio station being built and organized by folks who believe in free speech and want to get a decent radio station on the air. We believe that Seattle radio is not only plain bad, but there is no way to change these radio stations to make them better. So we are building our own instead.
In the old days, free press was for those that owned the press. Decades after the "electronic age", free speech on the airwaves is for those who have a transmitter. For the most part, only bad DJs and political puppets have access to the ears of listeners; we want to change this and give people something to listen to that is interesting, relevant, and controversial. In order for radio to real, it must be participatory. This means that anyone who listens to the radio should have a shot at being on the radio. The way we do it is by making the running of the radio based on what we want it to be, rather than what a boss or advertiser would want. We do this by building democracy into the radio station. We vote and elect, instead of taking orders. We are broadcasting without the approval of the government. In order for speech to be free, we just have to speak. If we wait for the government to approve, we are never free. The FCC has tried to stop others from starting "pirate" or "micro" radio stations. But for every one that is shut down, another ten are on the air. Building and operation of a radio station takes all kinds of people with different talents. Even if you don't want to be on the air, you can still make it happen. A radio station needs people who can fix and build equipment. It needs people who can raise money and organize events. People have to help spread the word when we are on the air, so that folks will know where to listen. And since the FCC may come knocking on our door, we need people with legal work to effectively challenge the law and fight the anti-free speech FCC. Most important, a radio station needs people who want to expose people to new kinds of ideas, and good music too. The bottom line is having fun and doing what we like, while changing minds about what is good radio. This project is being organized by a group called Committee for Democracy on the Public Airwaves. We are not affiliated with any political party or business. We are not a for profit group. We just want free speech on the radio and the committee is open to all who have an interest in free speech. |
