Operations (or Ops) is the collection of individuals who are involved or interested in the technical operation and development of SCN's computer systems. This is roughly those people who regularly attend the monthly "Ops" meetings.
For assistance in using the system or regarding user problems please go to the Help Desk.
Otherwise: if you need to contact a system administrator. please see the Ops contact list.
For instructions regarding system outages please see the alert procedures (preferably prior to need!)
In the beginning (of SCN) Operations (then called the "Hardware/Software Committee") was a small group of talented, motivated individuals with shared views who mananged to build and maintain SCN with an informal, collegial approach to coordination. Since then the system has grown in complexity, and Ops has grown in both numbers and diversity in regards of familiarity with the system, technical skills, points of view, and motivation. This has required stronger organization, and has led to the establishment of several positions to provide oversight and coordination at key points. The principal positions are:
"Operations Coordinator": responsible for overall coordination of Operations, and represents Ops on the Executive Committee."System Coordinator": coordinates operation and maintenance of the system ("system administration").
Follow those links for more information in each area.
There is much to do! If you are interested in joining Operations please contact Mike Walker, the Ops Coordinator at coyotew@scn.org Alternatively, come to one of the monthly meetings, or click here for more information on volunteering at SCN.
