LDS Winery Explanation

(linked to Religious Philosophy and Relationships on the Spectrum)

This explains the origin of the LDS Church Winery. The winery is mentioned on the webpage www.scn.org/people/autistics/religion.html in the context of rules changing according to the social standards of the time.y

The LDS Church Winery was a part of the LDS (Mormon) Church, instituted to provide sanctioned wine for Church functions. The winery ceased operations during prohibition. (Alcohol used in religious ceremonies was permitted under the US Prohibition law.) The following is an explanation offered from a Church member of the reason given for the termination of the winery:

The following is a note from a member of the LDS (Mormon) Church, describing the reasons for closing the Church winery:

I am an Autistic and a "Mormon" Yes the church had a winery because the Word of Wisdom (D&C 89, I believe - ed) forbade the use of alcohol with one exception.

Section 58 of the Doctrine and Covenants (the section containing the food laws practiced by Latter Day Saints) states this regarding the use of alcohol.

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.

The practice of using wine was replaced with water when an attempt was made to poison the sacramental wine. Water, which would not hide the taste of any toxic substance, was used to replace wine at that time.

...

The only thing I ask is that a respectful and factually accurate portrayal of any religion be presented. Without the entire context of why the church owned a winery while extolling the virtue of abstaining from using alcohol you present an inaccurate portrait. ...

The purpose of www.scn.org/people/autistics/religion.html is not to discuss whether there are inconsistencies in scripture; rather it is to address the fact that some of these rules are intended for NT society.
