What is Volkssporting?

Following WWII, small towns in Germany revived a centuries-old tradition of the yearly sporting festival. A specific time was set aside each year for competitive games between local townspeople. Events included walking, biking, swimming and cross-country sking. Urban-dwelling Germans welcomed the idea of getting a little weekend exercise in the fresh country air along with the chance to receive some recognition for their efforts.

Today, sanctioned events are held in all 50 states as well as 25 countries around the world. Oregon and Washington are two of the most active states within AVA boasting approximately 60 clubs as well as state organizations. Events are hosted by local clubs who invite you to enjoy their walking, biking, cross country ski or snowshoe routes with new and old friends. The most popular of all the Volkssports is Volkswalking, or the walk of the people. These events can be described as leisurely, non-structured walks you enjoy at your own pace. Walks are typically held on scenic trails, along rivers, near local gardens, around historic sites and through downtown areas anywhere it is possible to walk safely and pleasurably. You choose the pace and how often you stop to enjoy the surroundings. For some, this means a leisurely stroll with plenty of time for sightseeing and picnicking. Others move at a faster clip, enjoying everything from aerobic walking to jogging and running. It’s all up to you. The idea is to have fun in the great outdoors.
