The Puget Sound Cinema Society does more than curate cinema programmes, too:
- Being great believers in education, we are active in bringing film and video to students around the country with our Road Shows.
- We loan out equipment for free to assist aspiring or simply destitute filmmakers in completing their works and getting them shown. We have available cameras, screens, lights, microphones, and both video and film projectors in all gauges. For more information, e-mail us at PSCinema@scn.org and we'll tell you what we can do.
- We are currently compiling a list of all films produced in the State of Washington since 1970, and ultimately ranging back to 1900, for co-operative distribution of local films. If you are a filmmaker, please submit to us a list of films you have completed so that we can venture toward a certain honest thoroughness. This means features as well as shorts, industrial video as well as music video, animation as well as avant-garde. We think this project will be an awesome achievement in proving the richness of our community, and we would love your help.
Depth of Focus Gets Educational
Students are of course the filmmakers and audiences of tomorrow, and with that in mind the Puget Sound Cinema Society has begun to put together a travelling roadshow specifically for educational audiences. The amount of passive television and movie viewing that Americans experience by the time they are eighteen truly boggles the mind. It also becomes the single greatest obstacle toward a deeper understanding of cinema, not only because of its enervating effect on the mind in general, but also because such passive viewing of a limited range of material tends to set in one's mind the notion that only what they regularly experience is film, when of course the possibilities of cinema are infinitely more vast.
The idea behind The Depth of Focus Roadshow is to give every youth a chance to see what they do not and cannot regularly see for themselves. Hopefully, we will present to them at least a suggestion of the richness of film and video. That experience may just help them become more perceptive and adventurous viewers, and maybe even artists.
If you are an educator in primary, secondary or undergraduate education, by all means contact us.
Puget Sound Cinema Society is currently looking for a new venue for our Depth of Focus series. We have had something of a "relationship" with our past venue, and we simply think it is time to move upward.Watch this page for further details as we learn them ourselves!
Depth of Focus looks ahead
