Kris Lindbeck (lindbeck@haven.ios.com) reports she is a Lutheran writing a PhD thesis on Elijah stories in the Talmud "which is in it- self rather poetic, or at least odd (...both me and the Talmud)."

The Invitation

The dance:
There is a dance where as soon as you take a step it turns into a paving block and you walk on it, and as soon as you say a word it turns into an insect, a firefly, a hornet, or a lacewing and flies into your partner's hand. As soon as you turn, the sun rises gold and bloody, and the music of your heart never once falls silent.

Proper dress:
Cover your head and button your shirt to the neck while you feed fire within your heart because you want your heart to burn other hearts, or go out to the beach and strip off more than clothing so that the tangle of your hair becomes part of wind and the blood of your scars is swallowed by ocean.

When you arrive:
The radio will be playing songs in a language you don't know, and on the dance floor the floor boards wet with blood will be singing another song too loud to hear. And the beautiful will dance with the lucky ones and the beautiful will trample them under its iron feet.

Reasons to come:
You will be loved.
You will have work to do.
You may forgive us for inviting you.
