Seattle Canoe & Kayak Club Sprint Team Open House

Is your middle school student looking for a great sport that offers individual achievement as well as the benefits of participating on a team? The Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club are holding their annual "Open House" on Saturday, May 3 from 11 am - 1 pm. Come join us at the Small Craft Center on Green Lake. Get to see the competitive Junior Team do time trials, see an introductory video about the sport, meet the coaches, and then climb into the boats with our team members to get a feel for what it is like to be in an Olympic-style sprint kayak or canoe. You need to bring a parent/guardian to sign the waiver and bring a change of clothes in case you get wet! Questions? E-mail Tami Oki (phone 524-1116) or the Green Lake Small Craft Center at 684-4074 for more information.

This sport is great for cross training, requires no previous experience and can be done all year long. Lots of the team members also participate in other sports as the practice schedules are very flexible. We have several members who have gone to the Olympics or may soon be Olympic bound and plenty of paddlers who are just interested in the fun and physical health it promotes. It can be a fit for almost anyone! You must be able to pass the City float test before joining the club.

Beginner classes will begin the following Tuesday, May 6th and will continue for the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm and Saturday mornings at 8:00 am

Float Test

Every participant in the Sprint Team must successfully pass a float test prior to the first water session of a small craft class. The float test consists of floating, treading water, or swimming in place in deep water while wearing long pants and a long sleeve shirt for ten minutes. In the final minute of the test you must put on a life vest while continuing to tread water. A float test is valid for three years. Float tests may be taken at public swimming pools or public beaches under the supervision of a lifeguard certified by the American Red Cross. Regular pool admission is charged.

The float test form (to be completed by the lifeguard) is available online or in the office at Green Lake.

Who is the Seattle Canoe & Kayak Club?

The Seattle Canoe & Kayak Club is co-ed and multi-aged (grades 6 - college) and practices on Green Lake after school and on weekends. The team races in the Pacific Northwest (BC, Portland, Gig Harbor) as well as at the National Championships (Oklahoma City August 2008). Some team members also compete internationally. SCKC is affiliated with USA Canoe and Kayak (USACK) and the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation.

Our program offers fun, physical and mental training, skills and confidence building, socialization, coaching, competition and the opportunity for both team and personal success. Paddlers have the opportunity to develop as individuals and as team members. We have 3 coaches: Dave Fort, Chris Henderson, and Aasim Saleh.
