USACK is also recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the National Governing Body in the Olympic disciplines of Flatwater Sprint and Whitewater Slalom.

Event Description

Flatwater sprint kayak and canoe racing is a contest of speed, strength and endurance in which athletes compete head to head on calm bodies of water. There are 12 sprint events on the Olympic program. Men compete in single and double canoes and kayaks at distances of 500 and 1,000 meters and in four-man kayaks over 1,000 meters. Women compete in single, double and four-woman kayaks in 500-meter races. National sprint events conducted annually include U.S. National Team Trials and US National Championships.

About the Hosts: Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club

The Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club (SCKC) is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the City of Seattle to promote canoe and kayak instruction, education, and competition for youth and adults.

The SCKC Youth Sprint team is co-ed, multi-age (grades 6-college), and practices on Green Lake after school and on weekends. The SCKC is affiliated with USACK and the City of Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation. Our youth come from all over the city of Seattle and the surrounding communities to learn, train and compete internationally in canoe and kayak activities. While the sport of sprint canoe and kayak is an Olympic event, training must come from clubs such as SCKC.

The team also includes Master level racers who support the club, race on a competitive level and mentor the youth team. The Seattle club is fortunate to have a history (since the 1960?~@~Ys) of strong, competitive, award winning teams with five Olympians as members and mentors for our youth and master sprint team. Consistently, our youth have garnered top ranking in USACK National Championships, participated in the Goodwill Games and, in 2000 SCKC sent two of our youth team members to compete as part of the US Olympic team in Sydney, Australia. And, in 2004, team members Jordan Malloch and Nate Johnson qualified and competed in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

USACK National Event Community Impact:

Teams, fans and visitors will learn more about this highly competitive and successful sport through educational opportunities, event booths, activities, race promotional materials and through a series of targeted media designed to build awareness of the event and encourage spectators to join in the fun. The mid-August competition schedule affords the event traditionally high tourist and visitor attendance. Expected attendance at the event will be over 10,000
