Volunteer Guidelines

As an SCNA / SCN volunteer, I understand that I am expected to:

  1. Demonstrate respect for others, including their sensitivities, rights, and sensibilities.
  2. Speak gently and courteously, in person and EMAIL, with volunteers, SCN users, and others.
  3. Honor and support the efforts of fellow volunteers.
  4. Be patient and tolerant with others, including volunteers, SCN users, donors, and suppliers.
  5. Communicate honestly and tactfully with others.
  6. Listen before speaking, speak in turn, and honor others by allowing them to finish.
  7. Ask questions for understanding, and offer helpful suggestions instead of criticizing.
  8. Recognize and thank others for what they do. We all bring different gifts.
  9. Offer to do what I can -- and complete my assignments. Communicate what I can and can't do.
  10. Do my best work, especially so because I'm working for the love of it.
  11. Identify and avoid conflicts of interest and seek advice from others if in doubt.
  12. Leave my ego at the door -- team effort is what counts here.
  13. Help others to use their gifts, and to grow.
  14. Welcome people regardless of gender, race, origin, handicap, sexual orientation, religion, and any other characteristic not directly related to the job at hand.

Seattle Community Network: Volunteer Conflict of Interest Policy

Seattle Community Network (SCN) is a volunteer-run project whose primary intent is to provide free and public access to online services. In service of this goal, SCN volunteers are often called upon to perform a variety of technical and non-technical tasks for SCN information providers (IPs), and others. In the course of these activities, an SCN volunteer may attain an advisory position with an individual or organization within or outside of SCN.

To protect SCN's policy of no fees for services, any person representing SCN in the capacity of an IP mentor, hardware/software purchaser, network administrator, volunteer coordinator, ETC. must not use their position to garner monetary profit or any commercial advantage for themselves or any other organization. It is important that SCN does not give the appearance of conflict of interest.

IPs are encouraged to donate money to SCNA. SCN volunteers may only collect fees for services if they are not acting in the capacity of an SCN volunteer and they are not working with an organization they are mentoring.

I fully understand, support and agree to strive to comply with the items on this page and the SCN Policy and Code of Etiquette as a condition of being an SCN/SCNA volunteer.
