Send and receive email through any Web browser anywhere with your SCN account.

Seattle Community Network

If you've had difficulties with this SCN WebMail page, you can try reading your SCN email through the Mail2Web interface.

If you use both SCN WebMail and SCN Pine to read your email, please note that SCN Pine will move all new messages to its own folders each time you use Pine. Any and all new messages Pine moves will then be unavailable for viewing by WebMail.

Expire Pages on Server - not needed at home.
At public access locations, this box should be checked.

At public access locations, push the Log Out button on the email message screen when you're finished. Then close the browser (click the X in the upper right corner). Logging out by itself might not be enough, because of the software used on some PCs. After you log out and close the browser, you shouldn't be able to reload email message pages from the browser's local cache. If you can still read cached email messages without logging in again, clear the browser's cache if possible, and ask your computer center for assistance.

Data missing messages: Use the navigation buttons on the message pages, not the browser's Back and Forward buttons. Use your browser's history list to go back to a page that you viewed before you logged in to WebMail. If you are not at a public access location, uncheck the Expire Pages on Server box to avoid this.

AOL and WebTV users: When AOL or WebTV periodically changes your connection's Internet IP address, you can continue with your email only after you log in again. This helps prevent false use of your SCN email account, but it also makes things more difficult for users of AOL and a few other services.

Timing-out: If the system load is too high, WebMail might respond too slowly. You can try again later or login via telnet to read your email with Pine. Note that Pine will move new emails to it's own folders and these emails will no longer be available in WebMail. Another alternative to WebMail is IMP. IMP has been undergoing testing as a possible replacement for WebMail. If you are a registered SCN user and would like to try IMP keep in mind that it is under development so bugs are expected. Send comments to imp@scn.org

Server help: You can login to any other POP email server on the Internet, and read your email there, with this service. But you can send email only with your SCN account. To send email from this form, please login to the mail.scn.org server.

POP: Using Eudora and Other POP Email Programs with SCN explains another way to send and receive email through your SCN account from your PC, using a standard email program and a PPP dialup connection from your Internet provider.

For more info peruse: SCN Help: Email.

Email Virus Warning: Many email viruses and worms automatically email themselves from infected PCs and are programmed to spoof the "from" address to look like it's "from" someone whose email address has been forged, it may even look like it came from someone at SCN. It may contain a bogus message in an attempt to trick you into activating a nefarious attachment or embedded script. You might also receive automated false "replies" to emails you never sent if a virus harvested your email address from an infected PC and automatically sent an infected email to a domain that uses an auto-responder which uselessly sends false notification emails to innocent third parties just because their email address was spoofed. Refer to US-CERT for information on cyber-threats.

Email Hoax Warning: There are many email hoaxes and scams, examples of some of them are listed at HoaxBusters.
