SIHRC (Seattle International Human Rights Coalition) works to align U.S. foreign policy with international human rights standards. Through meetings, events, demonstrations, teach-ins and phone and letter-writing campaigns, we address issues that revolve around human rights concerns. SIHRC provides a sounding board for forums and a starting point for action.
SIHRC exists through its member organizations. Presently, there are seven dedicated groups that meet once a month to determine SIHRC's agenda. These groups are:
We welcome any other organizations that would like to collaborate with SIHRC.
Since its establishment in the spring of 2001, SIHRC has sponsored four major events: Global Ethics: An Idea Whose Time Has Come?; Making Friends, Making Enemies: Patterns in U.S. Foreign Policy; Colombia for Beginners; and Communal Violence in India. SIHRC has also co-sponsored over 30 events around the Puget Sound region.
SIHRC supports the implementation of the principles of international human rights, including those specified in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations Charter, and the Geneva Accords. We seek to promote peaceful, democratic and socially just solutions to international conflicts, as well as to internal conflicts and problems. To this end, we advocate on behalf of movements and organizations which we believe are promoting socially just and environmentally healthy solutions in their countries and the international arena. We support movements for genuine, democratically determined national self-determination, as well as self-determination and automony of indigenous peoples within nation-states. SIHRC further supports the democratization of economic and social institutions around the world so that all people will have meaningful say in the institutions that influence their lives.
SIHRC opposes U.S. military intervention in other countries and our government's support for repressive and unjust regimes around the world. We work in opposition to a U.S. foreign policy based upon hegemony, force and/or the economic domination and exploitation of other peoples and countries. We are against a foreign policy based upon U.S. corporate control of markets and resources. Furthermore, we oppose corporate controlled economic globalization and its effort to undermine decent worker, consumer and environmental standards worldwide.

"[SIHRC]
Sounds like a very healthy development. Each of the groups you
mention is doing fine work, on issues of great importance. There
certainly are many common threads, and though each naturally has
its own focus, it seems they should all gain by combining
efforts, learning from one another, sharing burdens and
celebrating achievements together."
- Noam Chomsky
"The fight
for human rights is an essential part of the fight for democracy
and social justice. My best wishes to the Seattle International
Human Rights Coalition. May you enjoy success in alerting larger
publics and in struggling on behalf of human rights at home and
abroad."
- Michael Parenti
