During the month of August 2002, two students from our Sister City:Pecs, Hungary, came to Seattle for a 2 weeks stay. This is the 3rd year in a row, that we have undertaken this program, inviting two students from Pecs to visit Seattle for a cultural/educational experience. The students: Istvan Farkas and Brigitta Ulrich arrived on August 15th and were greeted by their host families. For each day, a program was planned and arranged: the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, Museums, the Aquarium etc. Later, Istvan and Brigitta had an opportunity to hike in Mt. Rainier National Park, to see the Toppenish Indian Center, to visit the Yakima Valley Wineries (for wine-tasting) and to hike to Tinkham Lake in the Cascades.
Their stay was concluded by a lovely fare-well dinner at Salty's at Alkai, where Istvan's birthday was also celebrated. The next day, the 29th of August, they headed home, loaded down with photos and unforgettable memories...

Our Sister City: Pecs finally came... Finally the day had come and on 3/20/02 the Mayor's delegation (5 members) together with the Youth House String Orchestra (25 members) of Pecs, Hungary, arrived in Seattle. The host families welcomed them at the Airport and then with their musical instruments and luggage in hand, they were
paired up with their respective host families and they started their short
but busy days in Seattle. To view photos of the concert click imagegallery1 and imagegallery2.

Separate schedule was prepared for the Mayor's delegation: Dr. Jeno Ujvari,
Vice Mayor, Mr. Peter Kekes, General Manager of Pecs Industrial Park, Dr.
Istvan Abraham, Chief Advisor to the Mayor, Mr. Endre Bokay, Director of
Housing at Pecs University and Eva Feher, International Relations Officer;
their program included a courtesy visit with Seattle's Deputy Mayor Tim
Ceis, a visit to the Police Department, Park & Recreation Department as
well as the Water Department. Next day Dr. Ujvari and Mr. Kekes conducted a
presentation on business opportunities in Hungary at the Breakfast with the
Trade Development Allience. A trip to Boeing company was scheduled for the
following day.

The Youth House String Orchestra gave a full concert at Overlake's Fulton
Performing Art Center and performed also for the Hungarian American
community at Mercer Island during their commemoration of Hungary's 1848
Revolution for Independence. The musicians and their conductor: Mr. Kornel
Gyori met the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Dan Peterson, General
Manager of SYSO hosted a luncheon for them.

There was time to visit Seattle's Museum of Flight and the Experience Music
Project as well as for a boat trip to Blake Island to learn about the
Pacific North-West Native American culture.

Then a 2 day trip to Ellensburg followed. Ellensburg's Central Washington
University has Sister University relationship with Pecs University, with an
active faculty and students exchange. So the guests visited the campus, the
delegation met with the President of the university as well as with the
Director of International Studies. The Orchestra played a full evening program
at Hertz Hall and enjoyed the warm reception which followed.
Then it was time to leave and we hope our guests left with many wonderful
memories about their one week stay in our Pacific North-West. We most
certainly hope, that the bond and cooperation between our sister cities has
reached a new high which portends many a great joint program for the future.
