Workshops Offered
Bear Creek Art Studio in Woodinville WA is sponsoring 2 free workshops taught by Bitsy Bidwell of the WA State Arts Commission, on Saturday, March 31.
"The Business of Being an Artist" will be held from 10-noon and was previously advertised. It is full but there is a waiting list for those who are interested but not yet registered.
The afternoon workshop is "Program Management" (see description below). It will run from 1-3pm.
Please RSVP to Lisa Sheets at matts@matts.seanet.com to register, or for more information, as space is limited.
Both workshops will be held at Bear Creek Art Studio, 13931 Bear Creek RD NE, Woodinville WA 98072.

Project Management is aimed at those groups that want to present an arts event, but do not have an established organization to provide structure. The workshop will cover event planning, legal issues, administrative recordkeeping, finances, and evaluation/documentation. Particularly helpful for new groups, or those seeking to use another organization as their fiscal agent for granting purposes, this workshop is also an excellent refresher for established groups or those with changing leadership.

An extensive workbook will accompany the workshop and assist start-up groups by providing forms that can be copied and used without additional effort. This workshop is a great introduction for those who want to provide arts to their communities, have a great idea, but don't know how to start.

Bitsy Bidwell is the Community Arts Development Manager for the Washington State Arts Commission in Olympia, a position she has held for the past 13 years. She considers herself a generalist with information on a broad range of topics and a specialist at synthesizing that information to provide appropriate and relevant assistance for local arts councils and commissions, arts producing and presenting organizations, artists around the state, and others.

She regularly offers workshops on grantswriting and nonprofit organizational development to constituents within the state and has presented workshops to national and international audiences. Her program, Community Arts Development, handles all requests for technical assistance and information and referral. Bidwell teaches only what she knows firsthand, whether as a grantwriter, a fundraiser, a promoter or an educator.

Bidwell has successfully written grants to federal, foundation, and corporate sources over her 26 years in arts administration. As a volunteer she has raised funds through direct mail, through one-on-one solicitation, and through a variety of fund raising events. Her stories of what works and what doesn't work come from real life and provide a true picture of working in the nonprofit arts community.
