We are interested in developing ways in which information technology can contribute to the development of a "healthy community." Project ideas include:
1) develop an electronic network for community members (including service providers and community at large) to identify and refer community members-in-need to appropriate services;
2) develop a system for a community to do on-going community scans on itself, for itself; or
3) develop a system that compiles quality of life-related data (that is currently gathered and stored by various agencies) and makes it accessible for community use.
All these projects include database development, access/use tools, and applications.
My preference (from these three ideas) would be based upon the theortical understanding of the student team (eg. understanding of community development process, appropriate use of statistical data, etc.)
After talking to some community people, I decided that the most beneficial
project for our community is the one associated with a Community Referral
System. We see a system where clients in need of help can get to the right
person/agencie the first time and at the time they ask for help. This more
than the typical referral directory. The system takes the clients as far as
possible through the referrral system. The target users are community members
AND service providers. For example, a doctor should be able to initiate a
referral for a patient to tobacco ceasation program; a teacher refer a family
to the Food Bank, and a community member refer themselve to housing assistance
program.
Mason Matters has the resources, tools and committment to bring the right
people to the table so this system works and meets our community's needs.
I have also identified more community contacts, who are eagerly willing to
participate in the supervision, management and development of this project.

I am trying to bring in a representative from CHOICE Regional Network as well.
I'll update you if there are any new contacts. I need to know what we need to
do/have ready/have in place, in order to be ready when the students begin.
##
CHOICE Regional Health Network is also interested in joining our project. So,
you can add Kristen West, Executive Director, 493-5714 as the fourth contact.
I still need to know what you expect us to have and where you expect us to be,
in order for the students to start their work.
Thanks Kim
Mason Matters is a healthy communities initiative. One of our goals is create an environment where community members engage in, create and implement community-owned solutions. Thus, our objectives including building/enhancing community capacity, supporting locally developed community solutions to community problems, and most importantly, helping our community realize its unrealized strengths and contributions through community action activities.
