The United States and Indonesia have been partners in crime for the duration of the occupation of East Timor. The US has supplied Indonesia with over $1 billion in arms in the past 21 years during the Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations, during a period where 200,000 East Timorese--or 1/3 of the population lost their lives.

Indonesian soldiers opened fire on a crowd of thousands of protesters in 1991, killing 271.
