September 1996
Wannabe farmers started meetings, inviting speakers on topics such as land trusts and Community Supported Agriculture and held discussions on forming partnerships in farming and also participated in a series of weekend work parties to local farms.
September 1997
The Wannabe Farmer Book Group was formed to read and discuss books relevant to the basics of organic agriculture.
Gonnabe Farmers was formed in the same month and met twice weekly through the Winter and Spring to plan a hands on farm project for the 1998 growing season. Our meetings have been topic oriented with specific tasks and research being assigned to members for presentation and further discussion. These meetings have been a key element in our educational process.
1998 Growing Season
Gonnabe Farmers leased ½ acre from the Jubilee Farm in Carnation. Raised beds were developed on 1/8 acre, with 1/8 acre planted with squash and the remainder planted with cover crops of buckwheat, rye and vetch. Crops were harvested and taken to farmers markets in Seattle. Crops harvested included carrots, beets, chard, onions, basil, several varieties of squash and flowers.
1999 Growing Season
Gonnabe Farmers have changed their name to Wannabe Farmers to simplify the organization. The Book Group continues to meet on a regular basis.
Wannabe Farmers debate and accept proposal to expand our farm projects to include the Longfellow Creek CSA in West Seattle.
