Mayor Schell Visits Wedgwood

On June 19, 2001, Mayor Paul Schell joined Community Council Trustees and other neighbors for a walk down 35th Avenue NE and an introduction to neighborhood issues. Joining the mayor were Jim Diers, the Director of the Department of Neighborhoods, and other city personnel, including representatives from Seattle City Light.

Our first stop was the former site of an electrical transformer behind CC & Company at NE 86th. The mayor was very encouraging about community interest in converting this site to a neighborhood "pocket park." (Take a peek sometime and see what you think. The second stop was the Wedgwood Post Office, where we discussed traffic issues and the potential for a crosswalk. The City will begin gathering data at this site (e.g. counting cars) to evaluate that possibility.

The open space between the Wedgwood Presbyterian Church and the post office of course caught the mayor's eye as well. We described the ownership (split between the church and the Hunters of Hunters' Tree Farm) and confirmed how valuable the community considers this open space to be. Mayor Schell stated his support for farmers' markets around the city on similar sites.
