Nunatak: Music and Writing of Dennis Rea
Live at the Forbidden City
"Live at the Forbidden City is the story of an unconventional
American guitarist who stumbled into a series of improbable musical
adventures in China and Taiwan, playing in places where few, if
any, progressive Western musicians had played before...
My experiences playing music in China and Taiwan unlocked doors
into Chinese culture that few travelers, diplomats, students, or
businesspeople are fortunate enough to enter, giving me a singular
perspective on a culture in the throes of one of the most
accelerated transformations in its long history. At times, as in my
account of the fighting in Chengdu on June 4, 1989, the events
recounted here are deeply sobering; just as often, the sometimes
absurd cultural collisions described in this story are downright
comical."

Seattle Site of the Week:
Bike Works - Community Bike Shop
"One day in 8th grade, I was walking with my friend Mikaelin
and he mentioned something about working at a bicycle shop. Since
we were right by the shop at the time, we went in there and
talked to a guy named Chris.
"We asked them if they had job opportunities and Chris told
us that they had a program called Earn-a-Bike. For only $20
and permission from your mom or dad, you can participate. He
explained that you take a class about bicycle repair (a different
part each week). Then during Earn-a-Bike you work on bikes and
they pay you a bicycle part by part."
