April 13
Seattle Sites of the Day:

"The Peninsula Heritage Land Trust is a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation
founded and adminstered by volunteers residing on the Gig Harbor and Key
Peninsulas in the Puget Sound.
"... woodlands, wetlands, farmlands, wildlife habitat, scenic
natural areas and sensitive ecosystems on the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsulas
are rapidly disappearing as the area's human population increases.
" ...governmental action through land use plans, development regulations and
open space bond proposals... have been limited in their effectiveness,
subject to the desires of special interests, and, often to the landowners
dismay, of limited duration.
"An additional approach - private voluntary action - is being used by more
than 1100 nonprofit land trusts and conservancy organizations in the United
States, to preserve special characteristics of selected land parcels. To
date, these trusts and conservancies are protecting millions of acres."
