Project Heals Police-Minority Relations: Few Seattle officers are participating in the monthly workshops

The Skanner weekly newspaper covers Seattle and Portland. Here's a brief excerpt from its recent story about NCBI's efforts to improve police-community relations in Seattle. For more, see The Skanner.

"'Instead of sitting back and feeling helpless, the project encourages people to step forward and make an effort to find solutions,' Terry-Hays said. 'Not just the people who always seem to be in the leadership role but the ordinary, average person who also feels the effect of the strains between police and people of color.'" ...

"Terry-Hays said that the captains in both the South and East Precincts have given their support to the project and that some individual officers - including officers of color - have come to the workshops but that the numbers are very small. She said that she understands the reluctance some have about coming but that REAL's success depends on their willingness to come and talk honestly about their concerns. 'We want to hear about what makes them uncomfortable and how they came to have the views they have.'"

Hyperion Theater

"Hyperion Theater exists to explore our shared human experience through the immediacy of live theater, opening honest, relevant dialogues."

Seattle Mandolin Orchestra

"All players are welcome to join the orchestra. You should know how to read music. ... We make every effort to accommodate new players of any ability. We are in this for the fun! Rehearsals are at Queen Anne Manor Retirement Home, 100 Crockett St., Seattle, Washington on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m."

On Saturday, May 13, SMO presents a free concert at Woodland Park United Methodist Church at 302 N. 78 (Greenwood and 78th), from 1:00 to 1:45 pm. It's part of the Greenwood Art Walk.

Hear SMO's Mando Madness at Folklife on Monday, May 29 at the Seattle Center's Charlotte Martin Theater, from 5:20 to 5:50 pm.

NCBI is working "to strengthen relationships between Seattle's Communities of Color and the Seattle Police Department. ... The ultimate goal of the REAL Project is to ensure that everyone's perspectives and concerns are heard, recognized, and responded to, including those of the Police.

"The REAL (Reconciliation, Education, Action and Leadership) Project will train police and leaders in our Communities of Color to work as bridge builders and advocates for on-going liaison relationships. Over an eighteen month period, the REAL project team will recruit potential leaders from the communities and the Police Department, train them in NCBI leadership skills, facilitate the creation of community plans to improve Police/Community relations, and aid in the implementation of these plans.

"... One of the unique aspects of the REAL Project is that it is a community-initiated outreach to the Police. This is a powerful opportunity for community members and Police to take responsibility for building bridges to one another."

NCBI will hold a 3-day Leadership Development Clinic this Tuesday through Thursday, May 9 - 11. The next REAL Public Workshop is June 10, at Seattle Central Community College, Room 3115.
