Seattle Sites of the Day:

Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty

"The use of non-capital punishment... will advance the pursuit of fairness
and justice in our society, eliminate the risk of executing innocent people,
help stop the cycle of violence, free the community of exceptional costs at
a time when other pressing needs go unmet, and allow the pursuit of other
solutions to achieve the goal of community safety without the burdens and
problems that the death penalty brings with it. "
Seattle Knitters Guild

"Fifteen years ago... a group of friends formed the Seattle Knitters' Guild.
Since that time, our membership has steadily grown and now exceeds 175
members. ... Our goal is to provide a supportive environment for knitters,
present programs that stimulate our imagination, and enhance our skills. We
are also involved in educational and philanthropic projects within the
greater Seattle area."
Peace Trees Vietnam

"PeaceTrees Vietnam sponsors the clearance of landmines and bombs in Quang
Tri Province as a means of realizing the mission to reverse the legacy of
war."
"In Quang Tri... one child a week is killed or maimed by landmines and
unexploded bombs left over from the Vietnam war. ... With global citizens
working alongside the Vietnamese to clear mines, plant trees and provide
mines awareness education, the legacy of war can be transformed into a
healthy future for the children and families of Vietnam."
Friends Committee on Washington State Public Policy

"Prisons have been taking a larger portion of our tax dollars every year
since 1990, reducing the funds available for schools, roads, and other vital
public services.
"The percentage of our citizens in prisons has also increased, approximately
tripling in Washington and the nation since 1980. We now have five times as
many of our citizens in prison as Canada, which has comparable crime rates
except in murder by gun, and seven times as many as most European countries."
...
"... We need to find ways to achieve public safety which are cost
effective, and which are fair to victims, their families, offenders,
and our communities. To do so, we need to substantially reduce our
reliance on prisons." ...
"A major reduction of prison populations could be achieved by providing
community management and appropriate treatment for most nonviolent
offenders, who currently make up 37% of all prisoners. ...
"Providing treatment, rather than imprisonment, for drug offenders, who make
up 24% of all inmates, would also provide substantial cost savings to
taxpayers. A comprehensive California study has found that every dollar
spent on substance abuse treatment saved taxpayers over seven dollars in
reduced crime and health care costs."
The Vagrant Goes to Seattle (and Bulgaria)

"Practice phrase: I would like a double half-caf no foam percent amaretto
cap with room."
"... take the tour and see Seattle as I did for five days in March 1999."
"When I visted Bulgaria in May 1999, the country I found was a stark
contrast to dreary land I had read about when I was younger."

CPSR Conference:

Shaping the Network Society

"There is more to the Internet than e-commerce! Join Veran Matic, Bill Joy,
Howard Rheingold, Nancy Kranich and many others from around the world in an
exciting and historic exploration of how people can influence the directions
of communication technology. Shaping the Network Society: The Future of the
Public Sphere in Cyberspace. University of Washington HUB."
May 18 - "The critical importance of CPSR's Shaping the Network
Society symposium was underscored by the seizure of B292
broadcasting equipment by security forces in the former Yugoslavia.
Station manager Veran Matic who was scheduled to discuss the importance
of a 'public sphere' to 500 attendees at CPSR's Seattle symposium was
compelled to remain at home after the seizure. Matic and other B292
employees are currently working to keep the news flowing using Internet
streaming technology. Veran Matic's name card will still be displayed
at the symposium in front of his empty chair. A statement from Matic
will be read at the symposium and symposium organizers are exploring
other ways of ensuring that his important message will not be
silenced."
