Seattle Sites of the Day:

Northwest Folk Dancers Incorporated

"... the 'Where to Folk Dance Organization' for the Pacific Northwest... a
non-profit 'umbrella' organization that promotes folk dancing and ethnic
events" and publishes extensive schedules of dances and classes.
Seattle Colombia Committee

"... 2,500 members of Colombia's largest labor confederation [the CUT] have
been assassinated since the confederation's founding in 1986. ...
"One union that could use assistance is the union of the madres comunitarias
(community mothers). The state pays the madres comunitarias half the minimum
wage (about $25 a month), providing the rest of their compensation in food.
"The madres comunitarias live in marginalized neighborhoods, where they bring
15 children, 5-years old and under, into their tiny makeshift homes to care
for them while their parents or guardians are working. A large percentage of
the children whom the madres comunitarias care for are from displaced
families."
"... there is a possibility that we could work through the CUT and the union
of the madres comunitarias to help displaced people..."
Northwest Adoption Exchange

NWAE "has been providing special needs adoption services since 1976." ...
"Of all the special needs, age is often the most significant for adoptive
families. And finding families for girls over the age of 12, boys over the
age of 10, and for African American boys over the age of 2 can be especially
challenging.
"Most waiting children are between the ages of 6 and 18. Some have
developmental, physical, or medical conditions requiring ongoing
interventions. ... For the majority of waiting children, however, their most
challenging special needs are those rooted in early childhood experiences.
"Most are from families where parental alcohol and drug abuse were prevalent.
Many have been physically and sexually hurt. And often, their basic care and
their intellectual, emotional, and spiritual needs were unmet. ... They are
children who have difficulty trusting and need time to form genuine
attachments."

Seattle Site of the Week:

Community Management and Development

CMP Site Map

"The Community Management Programme helps low income communities eliminate
poverty by strengthening their capacity for construction and maintenance of
human settlements facilities and services, and helping local authorities
convert from being providers to becoming facilitators.
"The Community Management and Development web site has over a hundred
training documents for community mobilizers, and is used by facilitators,
coordinators and trainers around the world.
"Training topics include NGO and CBO capacity development, gender strategy,
environment, management training, poverty eradication, urban farming, income
generation, learning an oral language, brainstorming, monitoring, report and
proposal writing, role playing, and many others.
"We are looking for volunteer translators to put the material into French
and Spanish.
"The latest news is the start-up of a small electronic discussion group
('loop') on these topics, with participants from around the globe
(e.g. Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malta,
Norway, Palestine, Philippines, Singapore, Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania,
UK, USA, Vietnam, Zambia, and elsewhere).
"To monitor or join the discussion, write
bm038@scn.org and introduce yourself."
