The Skanner: Holiday Recalls Freeing of Slaves

The Skanner's Al Sanders interviewed Pat Wright of the Total Experience
Choir about the Juneteenth celebration at Seattle Center (now through June
19th):
"'It was something I thought everybody in the world knew about. Then I came
to Seattle and found out that no one knew what Juneteenth was.'
"Juneteenth commemorates the freeing of slaves in Texas two years after the
Emancipation Proclamation was enacted and two months after the end of the
Civil War. Slaves in Texas were the last to hear of their freedom from
plantation to plantation." ...
"Seattle will celebrate African American Independence Day at the Seattle
Center, starting in the Center House on June 13 and moving to the Flag
Pavilion on June 16 for three days of music, storytelling and history."
The Skanner's article includes much more about the history of Juneteenth,
and about the celebrations, stories, music and food at the Flag
Pavilion today through Monday. All of the events are free and open to
everyone.
