Seattle Sites of the Day:

KRIZ / KYIZ Hall of Shame

"The State of Washington's five University's and Colleges - Who only admitted for the entire state 240 African Americans. Thank God For Historically Black Colleges!" ...

"Seattle Public Schools - For allowing 462 students at Garfield High School (Seattle) to fail and 561 others in possible danger of failing. Garfield High School leads the state in basketball and in merit. Students (mostly white) segregate to the third floor, shamefully while the students in danger of failing (mostly black) segregate to the first floor."

SCN 2: Dreaming of a New Regional Community Network

Special Meeting - Wednesday, June 28, 6:30 - 8:45pm at University Branch Library (50th & Roosevelt).

The Seattle Community Network (scn.org) is a free, public-access computer network run by volunteers. The Seattle Community Network Association (SCNA), the nonprofit that provides the SCN computer system, has been committed to providing equal access to information since 1994. SCNA maintains 38 modem lines and a text interface for use by those of us who otherwise wouldn't have access to the Internet. Most of SCN's thousands of users do have other ways to connect to the Internet, and are SCNA members because they want to support this kind of network.

We want to do a better job of providing community members with the services they need and want. We are now at the beginning of the design phase for creating a new Seattle Community Network, with new equipment and software. We would welcome your help.

On June 28th, we'll be having a lively brainstorming session about hopes and dreams for a new network and newer communications media - no critiquing, just lots of fun fantasizing and visiting with other community members face to face. Hope to see you there!

With some volunteer help, the results of this session will be posted online, and this will be only the first effort at input gathering. More to come!

E-mail help@scn.org with questions, or call our voicemail at (206) 365-4528 and one of our volunteers will call you back.

Seattle Site of the Week:

Harvey Muggy Stonewall Democrats of Washington State

"We believe involvement in the political process is the path to freedom and justice for all people." ...

"Harvey Muggy (1944-1991) was a grassroots political organizer with a vision. ... Like many gay activists, Harvey was triggered by the national anti-gay crusade of 1978. He registered voters, filled PCO positions with supporters, knew the issues and the candidates, and monitored elections precinct by precinct on maps like a general on a battlefield. He donated generously to political campaigns and made sure candidates knew it was 'gay money' that was supporting them. ...

"Harvey saw that even good friends could not stand up to the hateful rhetoric in the legislature as well as 'one of our own,' so he ran for 43rd District Representative in 1986. ... In 1988 he delivered the PCO votes that appointed Cal Anderson to the state legislature as the first openly gay representative in Washington.

"A child of Clallum-Irish parents, Harvey supported social justice for all as his motto stated: 'It is not enough to work for one group's civil liberties unless you work for all.' ...

"Harvey wasn't flashy - he just worked hard and had a lot of common sense and feeling for humanity. ...

"Become a PCO: leave a messsage for us at (206) 903-9613 or write to 1122 E. Pike St. #1196, Seattle, WA 98122-3918 and let us know what District and Precinct you live in. We can see if you have a vacanct office in your precinct to fill, or challenge an incumbent..."
