July 10
Seattle Sites of the Day:

"Asha-Seattle cordially invites you, your family and your friends to the
Asha picnic... on Saturday, 15th of July, 2000 at Lake Sammamish State Park,
Issaquah from 2pm onwards. Come and enjoy a day out with some great food,
interesting games for all ages, lots of fun..."
"ASHA is a non-profit voluntary organization" whose "commitment is bringing
hope into lives of children in socially and economically backward areas of
India by providing much needed education..."
"All administrative expenses are met by the core volunteers. 100% of your
donations contribute towards supporting ASHA's projects in India."
...
"... an ASHA member visits the project site (at his/her own expense) to
evaluate first-hand the organization, the site and the feasibility of the
proposed project. It is only after (s)he and the members are completely
satisfied that the project is approved for funding.
"ASHA strongly encourages members and people from the local community to
recommend projects that they have first-hand information about and which
could be monitored by people they know well in India." ...
"This village [Ullalu] is a small settlement of approximately 1200 huts.
The residents of this village were previously living in a slum next to the
football stadium in Bangalore."
"Overall our impressions were that the school [Seva Bharathi] is providing
standard curriculum education to children. ...
"The school however draws attention to conventional education as it is
practised in India. ... Education is seen as a basis to getting jobs but not
enough importance is given to quality...
"Maybe it is time to start thinking about what education really is - what is
appropriate education, what curriculum makes sense. We think that Asha
should start thinking about these issues more and expand its charter to
address some of these." ...
"Last year's survey found 230 children who were not going to school. Seva
Bharathi will be visiting their houses in May to try and persuade them to
join the school."
