"... ensure disadvantaged middle and secondary school students are prepared for, pursue, and succeed in postsecondary education.

"Early intervention efforts... address all possible influences that impact a student's road to postsecondary education. ... students, their families, their present school system (K-12), future school system (postsecondary), local communities, businesses, and state government.

"One in seven Washington children live in poverty. Approximately 18,000 Washington high school students drop out every year and 46 percent of state residents without a high school diploma are poor."

Geographic Information Systems at Seattle Public Library

SCN July General Meeting

Wednesday, July 26, 7:00 PM
University Branch Library
NE 50th and Roosevelt Way NE

GIS Presentation - 8:00 PM

Digital maps are now available on the GIS public-access workstation in the Central Library.

Joan Johnson will show some examples of the many geographic features in the Library's GIS, and explain the GIS training programs that are available. Demonstrations of the actual GIS data and software can be shown at the Central Library.

Individuals, community groups and other organizations may find GIS useful in planning for services, outreach, lobbying, and development.

The Library's GIS is also invaluable for property research in Seattle and parts of King County.

July 23 - 29
Seattle Site of the Week:

CyberChix.org
   CyberChix.org/gets/naked/

Qathi Gallaher's site says all kinds of things. Some of it is unsettling, like the first-person story and photos of a light plane crash in Montana's Bitterroot mountains. Here are a few paragraphs from part of her site that helps people in Noel House and Tent City:

"Before you start conjuring up lurid ideas of undressed women... let me explain what cyberchix.org/gets/naked/ is. ... a number of women get together to swap their undesirable digs. ... What remains unclaimed is bagged up and taken to a charitable organization..."

"Donations will be accepted at the The New Bardo Hotel through July 30, 2000. If you could not attend... CyberChix.org will make arrangements with you for pick-up. "BIG thanks to all those who've participated!

"Women's clothing will be distributed to the Noel House (206) 441-3210 Seattles major night-time women's emergency shelter.

"Men's clothing and other usable non-clothing items CyberChix.org will donate to Seattles Tent City.

"The current location of Tent City [July 17] is at St. Marks Episcopal Cathedral on Capitol Hill. 100 homeless people are looking out for themselves in a camp on the lower third of St. Marks parking lot. Some have lost everything they owned when previous homeless encampments have been bulldozed by the city, or through other misadventures of living outside.

"Any clothing that the residents can't use they are distributing themselves to other people in need.

"Other things that Tent City residents can use include everything you'd pack yourself for camping, including but not limited to tents, poles, stakes, rope, mats, blankets, flashlights, batteries, duct tape, garbage bags, leather and latex gloves, bandages and other first aid supplies, sunscreen, liquid hand soap, paper towels, toilet paper, styrofoam cups and towels, paper plates, plastic utensils, ready-to-eat food including sugar and coffee, fresh fruit, canned tuna, peanut butter, cold cuts, cheese and milk."
