Community Access Project

Tuesday, August 15, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at University Friends Meeting House,
4001 9th Ave NE
"Safe Schools Coalition meeting - a public-private partnership of 91
organizations (government agencies, schools, community agencies, churches,
youth/student groups, gay/lesbian groups, human rights groups) and 400+
individuals working to help Washington State schools become safe places
where every family can belong, where every educator can teach, and where
every child can learn, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation."
CAP Committee for King County - Wednesday, August 16, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at
Lesbian Resource Center, 2214 S Jackson St.
"The Community Access Project, a joint effort of Safe Schools Coalition and
American Friends Service Committee, needs volunteers. CAP is a statewide
effort to assess the gay friendliness of community groups and organizations
that service youth.
"For several years, the Safe Schools Coalition has been mailing its 'Safe
Schools Resource Guide' to every school nurse, counselor, librarian and
principal in Washington State.
"The Resource Guide includes, along with great videos, websites, books, etc.,
a listing of community resources such as youth recreation programs,
open-and-affirming communities of worship, sexual assault centers and so
forth. But the question remains: what kind of reception a student would
actually get at those places?
"So we are recruiting teams of youth and adult volunteers to make site
visits (sometimes undercover) and ask questions and really decide which
resources we should be listing. Then, in the fall of 2001, we plan to
publish a new edition of the 'Safe Schools Resource Guide'...
"Our volunteer Community Access organizers will work in pairs interviewing
local agencies to determine which ones are GLBT-youth-friendly and ought to
be listed in the Safe Schools Resource Guide."

Seattle Site of the Week:

ACAP Child and Family Services

"ACAP provides infant through preschool child care services, with
specific outreach to, and support for, low income and homeless
families [in South King County]. ... Parent support and education,
are also part of the agency's ongoing service delivery.
"Subsidized/reduced fee child care services are available to low
income families who are working, seeking employment or are in job
training programs. The goal of this program is to assist families in
staying off of the welfare rolls, by offering quality and affordable
child care. This program aids in the prevention of unemployment and
homelessness.
"Therapeutic Child Development Services are provided to children and
families who are referred by Children's Protective Services. The
program provides child care, therapeutic intervention (including
developmental screening, small group work, and parent co-op), parent
support groups, short term counseling, parent education,
transportation and referrals for additional services as needed.
"This program provides support and protection for children who have
been abused or at risk of being abused. It also assists children with
their linguistic, cognitive, emotional, and physical development.
"Through the APPLE (A Positive Parenting Lab Experience) Parenting
Program, approximately eleven, eight to ten week, courses are offered
each quarter in various locations throughout South King County." ...
"Lab classes are also conducted in order that parents have the
opportunity to apply their learning in a structured and educational
setting with their children. Parent education aids in the prevention
of child abuse and juvenile delinquency, by teaching positive
discipline, healthy choices, stress management, and appropriate
expression of emotions.
"Child care services are available on site at West Auburn High School
so that teen parents can enroll their children in while they work
towards completion of their high school diploma. This program exists
to help teen parents become self-sufficient and productive citizens."
