UW Diversity Coalition General Meeting

"It came as more of a whisper than a bang, but on July 11th 2000,
University of Washington President Richard McCormick made the loudest
statement toward campus diversity to take place in almost 30 years. ...
A formal announcement and ceremony by administrators and students will
take place in the fall quarter. ...
"This is our third meeting of a diversity coalition that has been created to
coordinate UW and local diversity efforts. This meeting is open to all
people. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members are all
encouraged to attend - we need your help!"

Coalition to Undo Racism Everywhere

"CURE is an exciting coalition that consists of some of the most
amazing and committed social justice activists in Seattle!
"The first action that CURE sponsored was on July 5, 2000 where 100
community members attended the Seattle School Board meeting. Ten
speakers from a variety of perspectives spoke about racism,
disproportionality, and the need for curriculum transformation
in Seattle's K-12 system.
"CURE put out this statement regarding the event: 'We are
gathering in protest to further address the need for a process
that includes families, youth and community members in
developing a system of accountability and a plan to eliminate
racism and disproportionality in schools.'"

Seattle Site of the Week:

ACAP Child and Family Services

"ACAP provides infant through preschool child care services, with
specific outreach to, and support for, low income and homeless
families [in South King County]. ... Parent support and education,
are also part of the agency's ongoing service delivery.
"Subsidized/reduced fee child care services are available to low
income families who are working, seeking employment or are in job
training programs. The goal of this program is to assist families in
staying off of the welfare rolls, by offering quality and affordable
child care. This program aids in the prevention of unemployment and
homelessness.
"Therapeutic Child Development Services are provided to children and
families who are referred by Children's Protective Services. The
program provides child care, therapeutic intervention (including
developmental screening, small group work, and parent co-op), parent
support groups, short term counseling, parent education,
transportation and referrals for additional services as needed.
"This program provides support and protection for children who have
been abused or at risk of being abused. It also assists children with
their linguistic, cognitive, emotional, and physical development.
"Through the APPLE (A Positive Parenting Lab Experience) Parenting
Program, approximately eleven, eight to ten week, courses are offered
each quarter in various locations throughout South King County." ...
"Lab classes are also conducted in order that parents have the
opportunity to apply their learning in a structured and educational
setting with their children. Parent education aids in the prevention
of child abuse and juvenile delinquency, by teaching positive
discipline, healthy choices, stress management, and appropriate
expression of emotions.
"Child care services are available on site at West Auburn High School
so that teen parents can enroll their children in while they work
towards completion of their high school diploma. This program exists
to help teen parents become self-sufficient and productive citizens."
