Center for Ethical Leadership

Dismantling racism and white privilege made central to Church Council agenda
"... according to Church Council President-Director the Rev. Tom Quigley
... the passage in 1998 of Initiative 200, which dismantled Affirmative
Action, along with the serious issues raised about police/community
relations with Seattle's African American community after the shooting of
David John Walker last spring have brought renewed attention to the issue of
racism in our community. ...
"'In recent times, people of faith have often been unwilling to step forward
and visibly work toward ending racism and white privilege in the greater
Seattle area,' said Paula Harris-White, chair of the Commission on Racial
Justice. ...
"... the Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan... spoke to the board members at their
September 5 meeting. 'Are we really the racially diverse groups that our
letterheads, board listings, and proclamations may indicate we are...? How
have our structures and practices been altered by the issues and
perspectives of people of color communities?
- Not just their needs, but their gifts, skills and cultures or ethos?'
"Sullivan suggested that rather than ask how to involve people of color,
board members should ask why people of color would want to be involved in
historically white mainline ecumenical agencies. ...
"Under the guidance of Bill Grace, chair of the Church Council Board's
Planning Committee and director of the Center for Ethical Leadership, board
members each made a verbal commitment to another person to one specific
action they will take to promote change within the Church Council and/or
their home institution.
"'Part of the process is truth telling about ourselves, our home
institutions and the Church Council,' Grace said ... 'If healing and
progress are to be made we will need to take courageous public steps to undo
racism.'"
