Jesus Tecu Osorio:

Impunity and the International Lending/ Financing
Institutions
Friday October 20, 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. at UW Thomson Hall, Room
317.
Saturday October 21, 7:00 p.m. at Poulsbo Fire Station, 911 NE Liberty Road.
Monday, October 23, 7:30 p.m. at University Unitarian Church,
6556 35th Ave NE.
From Peace and Justice Events Calendar:

"Human rights worker Jesus Tecu from Guatemala, a survivor of the
1982 Rio Negro massacre, in which 177 Mayan Achi men, women, and
children were murdered by a government-sanctioned death squad
that was making way for a World Bank dam project, will talk about
'Genocide, Impunity and the International Lending/ Financing
Institutions.'"
From Kitsap UU Fellowship newsletter:

"Jesus Tecu Osorio is an internationally recognized human rights activist
who survived the Rio Negro massacres of the 1980's, and despite continued
death threats and intimidation has worked to bring those responsible to
justice.
"This is remarkable given the climate of Guatemala: where union
workers who ask for living wages are kidnapped, killed or forced into exile;
and where peasants who lose their land as a consequence of privatization or
international projects, are threatened or tortured when they object.
"Jesus Tecu will tell about the effects of impunity and international loan
agencies, and his human rights work. The UU Central America Network, and
local Amnesty International groups sponsor his visit. You are encouraged to
attend - to educate yourselves and to honor and support this courageous
individual."

UW
Diversity Breakfast

Saturday, October 21, 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. at UW HUB Ballroom
"... during this breakfast, I will be participating in a signing ceremony
with President McCormick to put in place the most significant diversity
plan for the UW in 30 years.
"As you know, I-200 has reduced the percentage of under-represented
minority students entering the UW by an unacceptable amount. This
legislation has literally wiped out over 20 years of progress in this
area.
"This breakfast is important because it helps us raise scholarship
funds for deserving students. It is a special time for students to network
with alumni and meet people who make positive impacts and give back to
their communities. It is, without peer, the most motivational event I
attend each year and I want to make sure we get lots of students there. ...
"If you are interested in sponsoring a student, or making a donation to our
scholarship fund, please e-mail me at
tjross@u.washington.edu or
call me at (206) 720-1279, immediately. ...
"All the money raised from this message will go directly towards
sponsorship for high school and college students, in your name. Thanks!"
