"The calendar includes serious presentations and demonstrations as well as fun events such as concerts, and covers topics including opposing U.S. military intervention and economic sanctions, preserving the environment, achieving racial and economic justice, preserving reproductive choice, working for gay rights, supporting unions, providing social services including health care and housing, democratizing our government, opposing police brutality, etc."

MON DEC 7, 7 p.m., in Kane Hall, University of Washington; Raul Alfonsin, former President of Argentina will speak on "HUMAN RIGHTS AND TRANSITIONS TO DEMOCRACY" with an extended introduction by Jaime Malamud-Goti, former Attorney General and legal advisor to President Alfonsin, hosted by UW Human Rights Education and Research Network (HRERN) to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and inaugurate the UW's three-campus Human Rights Network. Washington, Seattle, free and open to the public. President Alfonsin's administration commissioned the world's first "truth commission" to investigate war crimes and human rights abuses committed during Argentina's military dictatorship, often referred to as the "dirty war." TUES DEC 8, presentations by South African Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner Dr. Wendy Orr, a medical doctor, who in 1985, while working as a doctor within the prison system in Port Elizabeth, successfully applied for an urgent restraining order from the Supreme Court, to prevent police from assaulting and torturing political detainees, the first and only doctor to have taken such action.
