13th Annual Seattle Gymanfa Ganu -- Lake City Presbyterian Church
The Seattle Welsh Choir presented its 13th annual Gymanfa Ganu at 2:30pm
on Sunday, October 8, 2000, at the Lake City Presbyterian Church, 3841
NE 123rd Street, Seattle. Conductor: Beverly Ratajak, Corvallis, Oregon.
A sizable audience responded enthusiastically to Beverly's direction, and
had much wonderful singing and fellowship. Attendees travelled from
Portland, San Francisco, Anchorage Alaska, and Vancouver BC.
The North American Welsh Choir - Côr Cymry Gogledd America (CCGA)
presented a program of Welsh music on May 20, 2000, at 7:00PM, in Seattle.
This "regional" concert included the choir members who reside near
Seattle, augmented by guest choir members from all over North America,
which resulted in a very strong choir of about 30 voices. The
program included both traditional Welsh numbers, and some music just
written especially for the CCGA. For more information about CCGA, click
here.
Where and When: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church,
111 NE 80th St, Seattle, WA 7:00PM
Admission: $10 at the door.
Robin Huw Bowen is a virtual one-man crusade in promoting the Welsh triple
harp and its music. He is the only professional harpist now specializing
in this unique instrument.
He was joined in this concert by Sue Jones Davies, an actress and singer
of considerable reputation. She is a regular performer on Welsh language
television, and has recorded two albums with the folk group Cusan Tan.
Opening the concert was Seattle's own Red Dragon Band, which brings
a wealth of musical talent and enthusiasm to a repertoire of traditional
Welsh tunes.
Where and When: Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 14514
- 20th Ave NE, Shoreline WA 7:30PM
Admission: $10 at the door.
The Seattle Welsh Choir did hold their annual Christmas Concert at 2:30PM
on Sunday, December 5, 1999, near Green Lake. This event has grown in scope
and popularity over the past few years in the Seattle area. It featured
readings drawn from "A Child's Christmas in Wales" by Welsh author/playwright
Dylan Thomas, and carols and hymns drawn from all eras of Welsh musical
tradition.

12th Annual Seattle Gymanfa Ganu--A Slice of the '99 National
The Seattle Welsh Choir presented its 12th annual Gymanfa Ganu at 2:30pm
on Sunday, October 10, at the Lake City Presbyterian Church, 3841 NE 123rd
Street, Seattle. This Gymanfa Ganu was special, coming as it did close
on the heels of the 1999 North American Gymanfa Ganu ("The National"),
with many choristers from the first North American Welsh Choir (Côr
Cymry Gogledd America) participating, and led by the director of that Choir,
Ms. Mari Morgan. It was preceded on Saturday night by a Grand Concert,
featuring Mari Morgan and many North American Welsh Choir singers.
-
Q: WHAT is a Gymanfa Ganu ?
-
A: A full session of community congregational singing in four-part harmony.
The gymanfa will typically include fifteen to twenty hymns, in both English
& Welsh. Special music is often also performed by virtuoso soloists
with regional or even international reputations. Here courtesy of
the pastor of Rehoboth Welsh Chapel, in Delta PA is another
definition of gymanfa ganu.
Pacific Northwest Welsh Weekend
The ninth annual Pacific Northwest Welsh Weekend happened April 17-18 1999,
in Tacoma, WA. Events included Noson Lawen, Welsh Marketplace, Welsh language
lessons, Welsh folk-dancing, Ysgol Gan (singing school), Grand Concert,
PNWGGA Annual Meeting, and a Gymanfa Ganu (songfest).
The tradition of the Pacific Northwest Welsh Weekend originated here
in Seattle, in 1991.
Welsh Concert - May 13th
