Seattle, WA
West Seattle is undoing 40 years of progress, and the City of Seattle is paying them to do it.
The Westwood Neighborhood Council was awarded $100,000 in City of Seattle Department of Neighborhood Matching Funds to restore Roxhill Park to the peat bog wetland it used to be.
Roxhill Park is located at 29th Avenue SW and SW Barton Street. An informational meeting will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 3rd, 2000 at the Southwest Community Center (2801 SW Thistle Street).
Neighbors and interested volunteers are needed for the first scheduled planting date Saturday, October 14th, beginning at 9:00 AM. A community celebration kickoff party and more planting is scheduled for Saturday, October 21st, 9:00 AM. The third planting date is set for Sunday, October 29th, 11:00 AM.
The Council has partnered with Starflower Foundation, a group that focuses on rehabilitation, restoration and preservation of Northwest native plant habitats and coordinating related educational opportunities.
The headwaters of one of Seattle's major urban creeks, Longfellow Creek, originate in Roxhill Park. The bog was filled in with dirt in the 1960's to turn it into a playfield. Every year the local water table rises and the park playfield is flooded, turning it into a muddy mess.
Wetland restoration will be an ongoing project, continuing through next year. Please call Mary at 206.938.1318 or Gary at 206.937.1971 or email wncc@scn.org for more information or to volunteer. You can also find more information and sign up at the Westwood Neighborhood Council's Web site, http://www.scn.org/westwood/.
