The Women's Building
A Seattle office building at 3010 First Avenue plans to specialize in making rental office space available to local women's organizations. The building's owners will hold a grand opening for potential tenants on June 15th.

Queen Anne Historical Society
The QA Historical Society works to preserve historic parts of Seattle's Queen Anne district, maintains a community history archive, and holds bimonthly meetings to discuss Washington history.

University Community Urban Center
The Center's members are concerned about housing, zoning, public safety, social services, transportation and the environment. They hope to work together with the UW to solve residential and business concerns in the University District.

Gay and Lesbian University Employees
GLUE's page explains the group's activities and goals, and provides information about its social gatherings, public speakers, informational classes, and its efforts to lobby local and state government and to educate the public.

New King County Council Districts
Here's a map of the newly reapportioned King County Council districts.

Initiative 190
Peace Action of Washington mentions this proposed ballot initiative on its Action Alert page. Initiative 190 would change Washington's firearms law to create a four year renewal period for firearms licenses. Penalties for carrying any kind of firearm or ammunition while not carrying a valid license would escalate from a misdemeanor on the first offense to a class C felony on the third offense.

Food Lifeline
Food Lifeline distributes food to about 217 neighborhood food banks and emergency meal programs in Western Washington. The annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is May 11 (this Saturday). If you leave a donation of non-perishable food near your mailbox, your letter carrier will pick it up. To volunteer to help Food Lifeline, call (206) 545-FOOD.

Maple Valley Community Center
MVCC provides Meals-on-Wheels and other outreach and health services for homebound senior adults, crisis intervention for families, youth services and other programs that depend on the involvement of community volunteers. The Center co-sponsors a twice-a-week Seattle-King County Public Health clinic that each year gives medical attention to over 1000 children and provides over 5500 childhood immunizations.

New Community Networks: Wired for Change
One of SCN's founders, Doug Schuler, has written a book about community networks (like this one). You can browse some excerpts from the book, recently published by Addison-Wesley, and read Howard Rheingold's interview with Doug Schuler about virtual communities.

PTSA of Washington Middle School
Washington Middle School is in Seattle's Cental District. The PTSA is building a Web page to add to the information on the official Washington Middle School home page.

University of Missouri Alumni Association
There are at least 900 University of Missouri alumni in the Puget Sound area. Here's a link to the local Mizzou page.

Heidi Mo Hawkins' Acupuncture World
Heidi Mo Hawkins is an acupuncture practitioner whose specialties include pediatrics. Her page explains that "many common childhood ailments can be treated with acupuncture, such as ear infection, common cold, asthma, chronic cough, digestive disorders, and sleep disorders... Even disorders such as mental retardation and Down's syndrome can be treated with acupuncture, if treatment is started before the child is three years old."

Seattle Habitat for Humanity
Seattle Habitat has built homes in partnership with low income families since 1986. Construction is now underway on eight Habitat homes in the Central Area, and building permits are pending for eight more houses in South Park.

King County Democrats
The county Democrats' new page lists party meeting dates and times for each state legislative district in the county, and who to contact for each local area. It also includes links to a statewide Online Guide to Democrat Activists and a Citizen's Guide to the Washington State Legislature.

Puget Sound Welsh Association
The Pacific Northwest Welsh Weekend is May 3-4-5 in Victoria, BC. Here in Seattle, the Seattle Welsh Choir will sing at the Northminster Presbyterian Church on May 18th.

Lutheran Social Services
LSS helps needy residents regardless of religious affiliation. Some of LSS' wide range of services include foster care, adoption and aid for refugees.

CDS is a professional society for people who work in community development, and in public policy study and advisory positions in academia, government and non-profits.

Living Lightly on the Earth
Living Lightly's page features many sources of information about the voluntary simplicity movement, which encourages people to reduce consumption of scarce resources.

EarthSave Seattle
Earthsave considers how people's food choices, particularly meat, have a wider impact on the earth. The group's next potluck meeting asks the question, "Are our kids getting a healthy school lunch?"

Association for Women in Computing
AWC's schedule of upcoming events includes a discussion at the May meeting of how to succeed in technical management.

Artspace
Artspace is a non-profit group that helps artists find combined living and working spaces in Seattle.

University Folk Dancers
This friendly group meets every Friday evening at the Phinney Ridge Community Center, for mostly Balkan folk dancing. This kind of dancing doesn't require a partner, and everyone is welcome, including newcomers.

Electronically Literate Folk (Folklife)
The Folklife Festival is coming up, on Memorial Day weekend. SCN and the Festival are co-sponsoring an information center which will use the Folklife database, in the Seattle Center's Shaw Room. Volunteers will show people how to use SCN, sign them up for free e-mail accounts, and show community groups how to set up Web pages on SCN. We need more volunteers and loaned PCs for the Festival weekend.

King Soc-Serv Discussion List
The King-SocServ mailing list provides a focused forum for discussing social service agency administration issues. Anyone with an interest in these discussions may ask to be added to the e-mail list.

King County Literacy Coalition
The Literacy Coalition brings together about three dozen English as a Second Language and adult literacy groups. These programs need more volunteer tutors.

Family Services
Family Services offers counseling and support for families during difficult emotional times, and provides travelers' aid. FSH's services help families who are facing aging, bereavement, child guidance problems, depression, domestic violence, workplace difficulties and homelessness.

B. F. Day School
B. F. Day is Seattle's oldest public school. It's part of the Fremont neighborhood.

Northwest QRP Club
This month, NWQRP will conduct a field test of two-way portable and mobile amateur radio communications, of the kind often pressed into service during natural disasters. NWQRP has also built an experimental gateway between local amateur radio networks and the Internet.

Job Corps
The Job Corps is updating these pages with more information about how businesses can hire Job Corps students and how young people can become part of the program. There's also a guide to many other employment and job search resources.

Narcotics Anonymous
NA's page lists Seattle and Eastside help hotline numbers, and weekly neighborhood meeting dates and times. It also includes some information for professionals working in this field.

Community Voice Mail
The Community Technology Institute now offers voice mailboxes to poor and homeless Seattle residents, to help them in job searches and dealing with the social service system.

Lake Washington Rowing Club
The Lake Washington Rowing Club's programs include help for beginners, recreational rowing, and training for competitive rowing.

The Fringe Theater Festival is now in full swing. Have a look at the schedules for all the performances on the Festival's Web page.

Cancer Lifeline
The Seattle Cancer Lifeline offers no-cost help with pain management and many other issues. Its Web page includes links to information on the latest treatments, clinical trials and cancer risk reduction.

You can find the latest information about Comet Hyakutake, the SAS' public observing sessions at local parks, astrophotography, and amateur telescope making.
