- The Women's Building

A Seattle office building at 3010 First Avenue plans to specialize in making
rental office space available to local women's organizations. The
building's owners will hold a grand opening for potential tenants on June
15th.

- Queen Anne Historical Society

The QA Historical Society works to preserve historic parts of Seattle's
Queen Anne district, maintains a community history archive, and holds
bimonthly meetings to discuss Washington history.

- University Community Urban Center

The Center's members are concerned about housing, zoning, public safety,
social services, transportation and the environment. They hope to work
together with the UW to solve residential and business concerns in the
University District.

GLUE's page explains the group's activities and goals, and provides
information about its social gatherings, public speakers, informational
classes, and its efforts to lobby local and state government and to educate
the public.

Peace Action of Washington mentions
this proposed ballot initiative on its
Action Alert page.
Initiative 190 would change Washington's firearms law to create a four
year renewal period for firearms licenses. Penalties for carrying any
kind of firearm or ammunition while not carrying a valid license would
escalate from a misdemeanor on the first offense to a class C felony on
the third offense.

- Food Lifeline

Food Lifeline distributes food to about 217 neighborhood food banks and
emergency meal programs in Western Washington. The annual Letter Carriers
Food Drive is May 11 (this Saturday). If you leave a donation of
non-perishable food near your mailbox, your letter carrier will pick it
up. To volunteer to help Food Lifeline, call (206) 545-FOOD.
- Maple Valley Community Center
-
MVCC provides Meals-on-Wheels and other outreach and health services for
homebound senior adults, crisis intervention for families, youth services
and other programs that depend on the involvement of community volunteers.
The Center co-sponsors a twice-a-week Seattle-King County Public
Health clinic that each year gives medical attention to over 1000
children and provides over 5500 childhood immunizations.

- PTSA of Washington Middle School

Washington Middle School is in Seattle's Cental District. The PTSA is
building a Web page to add to the information on the official
Washington Middle
School home page.
- University of Missouri Alumni Association

There are at least 900 University of Missouri alumni in the Puget Sound

- Heidi Mo Hawkins' Acupuncture World

Heidi Mo Hawkins is an acupuncture practitioner whose specialties include
pediatrics. Her page explains
that "many common childhood ailments
can be treated with acupuncture, such as ear infection, common cold, asthma,
chronic cough, digestive disorders, and sleep disorders... Even disorders
such as mental retardation and Down's syndrome can be treated with
acupuncture, if treatment is started before the child is three years
old."

- Seattle Habitat for Humanity

Seattle Habitat has built homes in partnership with low income families
since 1986. Construction is now underway on eight Habitat homes in the
Central Area, and building permits are pending for eight more houses in
South Park.

The Pacific Northwest Welsh Weekend is May 3-4-5 in Victoria, BC.

Artspace is a non-profit group that helps artists find combined living and

- University Folk Dancers

This friendly group meets every Friday evening at the Phinney Ridge
Community Center, for mostly Balkan folk dancing. This kind of dancing
doesn't require a partner, and everyone is welcome, including newcomers.

- Electronically Literate Folk (Folklife)

The Folklife Festival is coming up, on Memorial Day weekend. SCN
and the Festival are co-sponsoring an information center which will use
the Folklife database, in the Seattle Center's Shaw Room. Volunteers
will show people how to use SCN, sign them up for free e-mail accounts,
and show community groups how to set up Web pages on SCN. We need
more volunteers and loaned PCs
for the Festival weekend.

The King-SocServ mailing list provides a focused forum for discussing
social service agency administration issues. Anyone with an interest in
these discussions may ask to be added to the e-mail list.

- King County Literacy Coalition

The Literacy Coalition brings together about three dozen English as a
Second Language and adult literacy groups. These programs need more
volunteer tutors.

Family Services offers counseling and support for families during
difficult emotional times, and provides travelers' aid. FSH's services help
families who are facing aging, bereavement, child guidance problems,
depression, domestic violence, workplace difficulties and homelessness.

This month, NWQRP will conduct a field test of two-way portable and mobile
