University District Farmers Market
The University District Farmers Market is open every Saturday from May 29 through November 6 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at the corner of NE 50th and University Way NE. Fifty farmers and food producers offer the largest and best variety of local produce available in the Seattle area. The Market has Puget Sound vegetables, berries, Eastern Washington fruit, organic produce, herbs, nuts, eggs, cheese, cider, honey, mushrooms, fresh flowers, nursery stock and fresh baked goods. There's music and entertainment. Seattle Master Gardeners, Seattle Tilth and Seattle P-Patch are on hand each week with gardening advice.

The new West Seattle Farmers Market at the Alaska Junction will be open on Sundays from June 20 through October 10, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. For recorded information about seasonal produce, call (206) 547-2278.

Westwood Neighborhood Council
Westwood is the West Seattle neighborhood between SW Holden Street and SW Roxbury Street and between 35th Ave. SW and Delridge Way SW. It is its own little "town." The Westwood Neighborhood Council is an open group of neighbors working together to improve the quality of life there. The Council will meet Thursday, June 10 to review the Westwood/Highland Park Neighborhood Plan and the Mayor's proposed response to the plan. The plan presentation is at 6:00 PM and the public hearing is at 7:00 PM, at the Highland Park United Methodist Church at 9001 9th Ave. SW. Contact Gary Sink at (206) 937-1971.

The next Longfellow Creek backyard workshop, about improving the health of the creek, is Saturday, June 12th.

Hemophilia Foundation of Washington
HFW is a volunteer, non-profit service organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of families affected by bleeding disorders. Every year, HFW sponsors Camp I-VY, a week-long retreat for children with bleeding disorders and their families. Twenty-four hour medical care is provided. The children experience the fun of camp while learning more about hemophilia and meeting other children with hemophilia. Adults attend workshops, meet other parents of hemophiliacs, and share their personal experiences and anxieties.

Nova Parents Group
Parents of students at Nova Alternative High School in Seattle's Central District meet monthly to discuss ways to help the school. The latest Nova newsletter mentions that the school needs volunteers for the lunch program. The program takes a great deal of work, and it may be eliminated next year if not enough volunteer support is available to continue it.

Real Poetik
RealPoetik is the little magazine of the vernacular, quotidian, witty and postmodern. Think of it as an attempt to invent an english lit for the last decade of the Twentieth Century and the beginning of the Twenty First. The Web site lets you read all the work published from 1994 through 1998. The e-mail version posts current writing to subscribers twice a week. RealPoetik actively solicits work from writers by e-mail. Send submissions to Sal Salasin at salasin@wln.com.

Peace Between People: Alternatives to Violence Project of Washington
Peace Between People holds workshops on nonviolent conflict resolution, in which participants learn techniques for community building, communication, problem solving, affirmation of self and others, and cooperation. Western Washington Fellowship of Reconciliation

Elliott Bay Pipe Band
The Elliott Bay Pipe Band is an active performance group of 16 bagpipers and 8 drummers. The band has appeared throughout the Northwest at festivals, ceremonies, parades and concerts, opening for Celtic and rock bands such as Wolfstone, Raven and Tchkung. The EBPB is featured in the soundtrack for "Progress," a stop-action animated short film completed in 1998. It is the Resident Highland Bagpipe Band for St. James Cathedral in Seattle.

Ravenna-Bryant Community Association
Ravenna-Bryant's all-neighborhood meeting is on Monday, April 19 at 7:00 PM at the Ravenna Eckstein Community Center at 6535 Ravenna Ave NE. Rat infestation and Seahawk traffic are on the agenda. See the Spring 1999 Ravenna-Bryant Newsletter.

On Saturday, April 24, the EarthWork Northwest Restoration Projects will plant native plants, remove non-native species and restore wildlife habitat in many places in Seattle. Anyone interested in working on restoration in Ravenna or Cowen Parks please e-mail Beth Williams or call her at (206) 528-0329.

On Saturday, May 8, Seattle Works volunteers will work on one-time service projects in the neighborhood. Possible sites include the Children's Home Society. Call Beth Williams to volunteer or to suggest a project.

On Wednesday, April 14, Rachael Paschal will speak to the Sierra Club's Sammamish Group on "Crimes Against the Water Code." Paschal is a water law attorney and founder of the Center for Environmental Law and Policy. She will explain threats to East King County's future water supply (the Snoqualmie Aquifer), illegal water uses and permit processes, threats to the recharge areas, and the proposed gravel mine in North Bend on top of the Aquifer. The meeting is at 7:00 PM at the Overlake Park Presbyterian Church on the corner of 156th Ave NE and Northup Way. For information, e-mail Gail Twelves or call (425) 747-1206.

On Tuesday, April 20, Seattle City Councilmember Richard Conlin will speak about how incorporating sustainability principles into city policy could help save salmon and reduce urban sprawl. This discussion is presented by the Sierra Club, the Livable Communities Coalition, 1000 Friends of Washington and Sustainable Seattle. It's at 7:00 PM at REI at 222 Yale Avenue N. Issaquah Valley Food and Clothing Bank
Issaquah Valley Community Services helps those who need food, clothing and related services. The Food Bank serves the low income residents of Issaquah, and the Clothing Bank and Toy Bank serve the greater Eastside community. IVFCB served over 3,100 people per month in 1998. IVFCB's volunteers are the backbone of the food and clothing banks. If you or your business, church, or organization can give just a few hours per month, please contact Cherie at (425) 392-4123.

You can drop off non-perishable food donations and usable items of clothing, particularly clothing for children and infants, at the Food Bank's drop box on the corner of SE 179th Street in Issaquah.

Community of Rochester
The unincorporated community of Rochester is in southwest Thurston County, south of Olympia. Rochester's Web site includes an online directory of local businesses and associations. In the Rochester School District, voters must decide whether to approve the 1999 school bond issue, which would help reduce school overcrowding caused by rapid population growth in the area.

The Sustainable Wedgewood mailing list is a forum for discussing issues that affect the health of the Wedgewood neighborhood in northeast Seattle. Topics include creating a community "center," front-yard gardening, local greenspaces, neighborhood history, community fairs, neighborhood planning, Thornton Creek and so on. The list will also be used to post information on local events such as potlucks and nature walks.

Beacon Hill
The Beacon Hill Neighborhood Plan is finished, after two years of planning. It is the work of over 2,000 people. Young and old, people from here and there, rich, poor and everyone in between came to meetings, called, wrote, dreamed and voted on this effort. The City Council must approve the plan in September, but $50,000 in Early Implementation Funds is available now to get started on some parts of it.

Seattle Public Theater
SPT presents Power Dynamic: Sexual Harassment, an interactive performance, on Friday, March 19 at 8:00 PM. The Street Survivors Performance with homeless youth is Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 PM at the Pilgrim Church, 509 10th Avenue E. in Seattle. A silent auction to benefit street youth survivors continues through the evening of the performance. Call in your bids to SPT at (206) 328-4848 or send e-mail to spt@scn.org. The Incredible Undersea Trial of Joseph P. Lawnboy tours schools and community groups. It's at the Everett Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 2.

Citizen Lobbying Using the Internet and E-mail
"Lobbying means meeting with and actively influencing the opinions of elected and appointed government officials. This class offers a way of going about lobbying with a group. The overall goal of your lobbying is to present information to your legislators in a consistent manner so that a relationship can be formed. Optimally, they will come to you when they have questions about specific legislation. Work with that in mind, not with confrontation as your m.o."

Safe Place project
A group of social service agencies are collaborating to bring a national program called Safe Place to King County. Safe Place is a collaboration of social service providers, businesses, volunteers and community members. Participating local businesses would display a Safe Place logo in their windows. Any youth who needs help would know that this was a safe place to go. The youth may need shelter information, medical care referrals, counseling, crisis intervention, or just someone to talk to. The business would have a contact number to call. Once contacted, a volunteer would come out to the Safe Place to assess the situation and provide needed help. Youth shelters, youth counselors, case managers and others would work in collaboration to provide these referrals and services.
