Welcome
to Whittier Heights Andrea
Faste, Community Council President (amfaste@aol.com)
Who's
a Member? Living
or working within the boundaries of 8th Ave. NW on the east, 15th NW on the
west, and NW 65th to the south
and NW 85th to the north makes YOU a member of the Whittier Heights Community
Council. Neighbors from nearby join us when issues spread across the streets.
Our
purpose is to keep Whittier Heights a friendly place for flora and fauna, humans
included. What
do we do? Here's some of it... We
created and maintain Baker Park, a small neighborhood park at 8347 14th Ave. NW.
We hold an annual dinner at
Whittier Elementary School in September to raise funds and to provide a
chance for families to reconnect at the
beginning of the school year. Right now we're working
with the City to make 15th NW more pedestrian friendly and visually attractive.
We've also gone on record
opposing Safeway's locating of a discount style gas station at the corner of
15th NW and NW 83rd because of environmental impacts, traffic, noise and so
on. The Community Council is
the first group to contact if you want to put in a traffic circle, do street
tree plantings
or even have a parade. The Council encourages Blockwatch participation and sends
Jim Bohn (jim_bohn@hotmail.com)
as our
representative to monthly North Police Precinct meetings. The Council receives
information from City departments,
and is often asked to comment on neighborhood developments like changes in local businesses or proposed new
apartment developments. Where we fit in the
governance system.
We are the bottom rung in the city's
community council system, under the Ballard District Council, which
meets second Wednesdays of each month.
Our representative is Andy MacDonald (awm@alum.mit.edu).
Kay Ogren, the chair of Ballard District Council for 2002-2003,
is a resident and member of the Whittier
Heights Community Council. We
meet as needed but usually on 3rd or 4th of the month Monday nights. Depending
on projects we're doing, there may be work
parties, weeding parties or subcommittee meetings. We also welcome guests to
general meetings from time to time to
discuss neighborhood concerns. Our meetings are open to everyone.
We try to remember to have chocolate candy at our meetings at Whittier
School Library...less
messy than coffee. Apologies to dieters and those who are sugar averse.
Meetings start right at 7:15 PM and we
try to be done by 8:30 PM. Updated April 20, 2002 |
