OUT OF GAZA
In a few
days, Israel will begin "disengagement" from Gaza. To pay
for relocating the settlers, Israeli officials announced
that they will ask the United States for $2.2 billion
in aid. In addition to questioning why Israel is asking the
U.S. to pay the cost of dismantling 37 years of illegal
Israeli settlements, we might also ask what will U.S.
taxpayers get for their money?
Advancement toward a negotiated peace after 37 years of
occupation?
NO! On the contrary, Dov
Weisglass, senior advisor to Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon, states that current plans for withdrawal from
Gaza will freeze the peace process, putting it "into
formaldehyde."
Self-determination for Palestinians and a decrease in
violence?
NO! Israeli officials have
insisted that they intend to control Gaza’s air space,
coastline, and all borders. Meanwhile, construction of
the wall continues to encroach on other Palestinian
land, ensuring that a viable Palestinian state and
sustainable economy will be impossible.

the work of Women in Black; Join the WIB conference,
“Women Resist War and Occupation,” in Jerusalem*.
Gila
Svirsky, one of the founders of Women in Black, writes:
“Israeli politicians are acknowledging the need for Gaza
to have access to the world by land and air and are
negotiating the opening of these ports. This is not yet
public information, but a fact. International
pressure does work.”
*At least three WIB participants from Western Washington
are attending the conference. Join them at

WIB vigilers believe that peace, with justice, is
possible. A viable Palestinian state living at peace with
Israel is possible. Demand no less.
