Austria - SCI

Dear friends,
As you all might know the political situation in Austria is quite unpleasant as in the beginning of February a new right government was instaled that moves all Europe. We want to express our protest against rassist and nationalist politics in Europe in general and especially in Austria¹s new government. Therefore we ask you to include the following text in your summerprogramm above our camp-list.
Thanks a lot!
SCI-Austria

POLITICAL SITUATION
In February the new Austrian government a coalition between the conservative popular party and the extrem right Freedom party (Jörg Haider) was instaled. Since then a great wave of protest moves Austria. In many Austrian cities people are in the streets expressing their protest. The new government not only changes a lot in politics like closing the ministery of women, reducing state-grants for NGOs, conservative family-politics and higher budget for military-expenses. It¹s also the language that is used for discriminating minorities, immigrants ect. and producing and legitimating xenophobia, rassism, nazi-ideas and sexism. During the last weeks of protests in the streets we got to know a repressive police-system as well. Even official media seems to be under pressure. SCI-Austria sees itself as part of this protest-movement against the government and in general against this way of doing politics (no matter by whom or which party in which country it is performed). Besides joining the demonstrations and discussions in Austria we are preparing a study-part for our camps. So volunteers coming to Austria this summer will have the chance to discuss with us the situation here (and the implications for NGOs, immigrants...) but also the rassist, nationalist and sexist tendencies in the societies of their own countries or in the EU.
See you in Austria
