on a democratic basis (by the group itself to decide on the balance of work,
leisure and study activities).
* Camp language:
English
* a letter of motivation:
please send us the letter of motivation for the marked projects.
We need to know:
WHO is coming to plan a programme according to participants
WHY do you want to come to this very place
WHAT are your reasons to come there
WHAT sort of interests and experience do you have so that you can contribute
to the dialogue about stated problems (for example countryside)
We have arranged 48 projects for the year 2000- international workcamps. They are included in four basic programmes:
* "Meetings in the Countryside" - involving into the daily life and work of an individual village, including local and country life problems
* "Hands and History" - help with the renovation and care of castles, chateaux or small monuments in the landscape, help with building up experimental medieval village
* "One to Another" - co-operation with communities and associations working in the area of people with special needs, people with drug problems, children from socially handicapped families
* "Bridges to Nature" - help in the area of care of landscape, protected areas, environment and public spaces, work in eco-centres
Each project is based on one certain programme and at the same time has much in common with the others.
1. Program "Meetings in the Countryside"
This programme of activities has arisen from a co-operation between INEX and
STUZ (Society for sustainable life style) in participation with local authorities
and inhabitants, local specialists, members of NGO, etc.. Young people in the
whole from abroad, with about 3 Czechs are supposed to live for about two or
three weeks in a village in the countryside regions of Bohemia and Moravia.
Thanks to the kind of work, thanks to art workshops (there is opportunity to
get to know traditional local crafts), seminars, trips, excursions and games
volunteers might get a better understanding of the local problems connected
with sustainable life style in the countryside and discuss them with local people
Experience of the country lifestyle might approach the area of social problems,
eco-environmental and sustainability questions, self-administration problems
and lead to co-operation with the local community on the restoration of the
village. There is a huge space to make comparison of the situation and trends
in various countries, societies, village types and share their experience with
local people. The goal of this project is to involve participants to the situation
of our countryside according to the inevitable role of village for sustainable
development of our society. Young people from abroad are not only to meet inhabitants
of an individual Czech village and get involved to their current problems, but
they might be able, thanks to their different experience and insight, to contribute
with looking for solution, too.
The inhabitants of a the village have the opportunity to join camp seminars.
This should improve their inner relationship even towards the village and the
care for it. The presence of the volunteers might increase self-confidence of
inhabitants, involves them into solution of problems and brings them new ideas.
The long term aim is not only to keep up increasing the number of camp seminars
in individual regions of the Czech Republic but to maintain the continuity of
care and interest in places where the camps were successful and where the inhabitants
joined the camp activities.
We are looking for highly motivated volunteers for this very project with a
necessary interest of the programme and a good sense of humour.
Special project Meetings in the Countryside
The project helps to revive village communities and public relationships to
surrounding natural and cultural heritage. The project is supported by Ministry
of Environment.

Young people coming to take part in this programme might participate in the
discussion about urban environment and care for it, there is a chance to get

Volunteers could experience - at least for a while - the atmosphere of the medieval
castle or chateau, or the atmosphere of the landscape influenced and created
by human culture activity. Participants will have the possibility to meet town
inhabitants so they might experience the everyday town life in Czech Republic.
They could compare as well contemporary lifestyle with the lifestyle of our
ancestors. This might make perceiving and understanding of the history more
attractive and accessible.
Another aspect of this programme is to get an insight into the medieval life
while working in experimental village on reconstruction of early medieval objects.
As well as the "Meeting in the Countryside" programme this programme
is specialised for so-called simple life in the medieval village environment
and beautiful countryside. It tries to teach the young generation substantial

works with the methods of experimental archaeology which offer the experience
of the work outdoors in the countryside, possibility to get know something about
medieval agricultural technologies, to experience the medieval lifestyle including
craft such as ceramics, folk domestic craft etc. Beside this programme pays
as well attention to the particular former Jewish culture and right this year

special monuments. Only people aware of cultural traditions and values and their
own relationship to the environment, are responsible for the surrounding environment
and subsequently able to create a healthy society.

THE NORBERTINE ABBEY TEPLA
14/08 - 29/08
HIST/ENVI/RENO
VOLS 5
Project: The Norbertines came to colonise Western Bohemia in 1193. Since then
they made efforts to change the inhospitable highlands into the prosperous countryside
(from the human as well as economic view). After WW II - similar to all border
regions - fields, forests, villages as well as the culture deeply declined with
the deportation of the original German settlers and installation of the communist
regime. Since 1990 Norbertines are back in Tepla. They try to "reclaim"
culturally and of course also spiritually the devastated country again. However
the second goal is rather specific for the Norbertines, the first one should
be common.
Work: There are many depleted small cultural monuments around Tepla (for example:
baroque chapel from K. I. Diezenhofer, lot of small memorial crosses and pillars,
statues, points of view etc.) which are to be renovated, renewed, rescued. We
will cut and remove old bushes, clean the monuments, fix up new benches for
the walkers near the crossroads etc. Please bring your working gloves.
Board and lodging: Accommodation is provided in the former abbatial pharmacy
(now flats for employees). Beds in common room, WC and shower with warm water
are part of that room. Please bring your own sleeping bag. We will make shoppings
and cook ourselves.

3. Program "One to Another"
We started organising social workcamps in 1998 so this is quite a new program
in progress. The main aim of these camps is to help at places where social work
is provided. We support small communities and local centres, which vocation
is focused on help to handicapped people, lonely children, drug addicts, elderly
people in difficult social situation in their resocialisation. We have decided
to co-operate with social centres in their work with Gypsy children and children
from poor families, in the area of making up their holiday time this year.
The work that we do in these places is mainly manual (we sometimes help to establish
new centres sometimes), however, we expect that some concrete involvement of
participants in daily centre life will be worked out, too. That´s why we do
hope really motivated volunteers with some previous experience will find these
projects interesting and will apply.
The work at these camps can be sometimes a bit difficult but we believe that
it is a good choice and it might be very rewarding, too. All participants will
surely appreciate the exchange of experience in the field of social work in
different countries.
