- West High School, Class of 1973, Iowa City, Iowa. Told by many teachers that I didn't have what was needed mentally to go to college. Went anyway. Told by one teacher, Ben Van Zante that it would be difficult if not impossible to publish a high school newspaper on my own like the school newspaper, the West Side Story which only relied on advertising dollars to pay for itself. Published one (31 Flavours {spelled correctly})anyway, made a profit from the advertising, won 5 Sigma Delta Chi (now The Society of Professional Journalists) awards, and established new school and school district standard for self-sufficiently (i.e. publications expected to fund at least 50% of expenses from advertising) which is being followed to this day. Previously attended University High School in Iowa City, Iowa.
- Graduate, Voyageur (Minnesota) Outward Bound (Survival) School, 1972.
