Bert with friend, Iraq, 2002
Since the mid-1990s, Bert Sacks has been working full time unpaid to help raise our consciousness concerning the effects of war and economic sanctions as well as tens of thousands of dollar's worth of urgent medical and other supplies for Iraqi children in need. Bert's tireless and compassionate efforts towards nonviolent engagement have been an inspiration to the peace community. Now it is our chance to help Bert.
As some of you know, Bert recently suffered a mild heart attack and is now recovering well. However, without health insurance, he now faces medical bills--for a day and a half's care--of over $57,000 (!), which exceed his life savings. (For a listing of the hospital charges, click here.)
Bert greatly appreciates everyone's generosity in contributing to the medical fund and January 24th fundraiser. The brunch and auction were a big success. Thank yous and brunch photos...
Message from Bert: To all of the many people who have shown their support for me during my recent operation and recovery I offer my sincerest thanks. I have never felt so surrounded by such a caring and loving community. For all who came to the fund raiser on January 24th, my special thanks for your making it such a joyous celebration of community. And, or course, for making it such a financial success as well. You raised over $32,000 and, with the reduction from the hospital, my entire medical bill is covered. Thank you.
With deep appreciation and love,
Bert
