Investing has changed dramatically with the growth of the Internet. Today there are many online brokerages that offer the opportunity to buy and sell stocks, bonds, and funds with fees and commissions far below traditional levels. And there is a wealth of financial information on the Internet to help research investments. Your online investing decisions can be made with the aid of online reports, charts, histories, and ratings from the likes of Morningstar and Fidelity Investments. This discussion group will give you a chance to learn more about online investing and to share your experience with others. For the beginner as well as the expert. Registration required, the fee is $2 for each meeting.
Email I
- February 16, 9 am to noon; February 23, 9 am to 11 am--ENROLLING
- March or April Class--CALL FOR DATES
This class is designed for those want to use email but have no computer of their own. In the class you will set up an email address which will allow you to send and receive email through any computer which is connected to the Internet. You will be able to use the Senior Center's computers to send and receive your email. Or, use the computers at any Seattle or King County Library; at most senior centers; or at "Internet Cafes" anywhere in the world (Internet Cafes usually charge for the use of their computers--the other options mentioned are normally free). This class will be paced for the beginner and will take place over two days. Bring the email address(s) of friends or family with you on the first day of the class and you will start communicating immediately. There will be a total of 5 hours of instruction. This would not be the best class for the person who already has an email account through their Internet Service Provider (ISP)--for them, "Email II" would be better. Registration is required: $20 members, $25 nonmembers.
Email II
- March 13 & 15, 9 am to noon--ENROLLING
- April 4 & 11, 1 to 4 pm--ENROLLING
This class will cover setting up your email client for use with your email account at your Internet Service Provider (ISP). We will take a look at the use of Netscape's Messenger, Microsoft's Outlook Express and Qualcomm's Eudora Lite. Sending, replying to, forwarding messages, and sending and receiving attachments are the essentials that you need for successful emailing. Copying, cutting, and pasting are a necessary part of replying and forwarding and a part of commonsense email courtesy. We'll cover all these topics, and we'll look at accessing your email when out of town--or out of the country--by using a secondary web-based email address. You should be fairly comfortable with a computer before taking this class. Registration required: To be decided.

The class will discuss the structure of the Internet, how Internet addresses work, the different "web browsers" that are available, how to use browsers and configure them for your needs, and how to use search engines. The class will cover the Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Netscape Navigator browsers in detail. Students should have some knowledge of using a computer: how to turn it on and how to run programs. This class will be equally suitable for "IBM PC compatible" users and Macintosh users. Bring some web page addresses to the first day of the class. Eight hours of instruction over two days. Registration is required: $30 members, $40 nonmembers.
